Footballer Charlie Austin has been under police investigation after a crash which left a cyclist critically injured. The Mirror reports that the Southampton striker – who has not been arrested – hit the man as he set of from traffic lights in October.
In a statement, Austin said: “In late October 2016, I was driving in the city centre of Southampton and had stopped at traffic lights at a junction.
“I moved forward when the lights turned green and it was at that point that a cyclist unexpectedly came across my path and a collision occurred.
“Following a police investigation of the accident, I provided a statement to the Hampshire Constabulary in early 2017 to give them my version of events.”
Austin is reported to have stopped his car to attend to the cyclist, who was then taken to hospital. He has since made regular checks on the man, who has made a gradual recovery.
Hampshire Police declined to comment on the incident.
In 2015, Republic of Ireland midfielder, Darron Gibson, was banned from driving for 20 months and sentenced to a 12-month community order after hitting a cyclist while driving drunk in Bowdon.
The then Everton player ploughed into three cyclists who had stopped on a pavement to fix a chain before driving off at speed. Shortly afterwards, he collided with a pump after pulling in at a petrol station.

The incident was the incident. Don't know, I guess they are trying to figure it out. Could be an infrastructural problem.
What the driver did after it seems good. He stopped and attended to the rider. I know it's what he's meant to do, but, hey, we know some don't. He's also making regular checks on the man, that's going above and beyond for me, providing it is welcomed of course. The bloke could be a fan,, it's southampton. Or the footballer just might be a really nice bloke, who no matter how it happened, regrets hurting him.

This is a complete non story.
Man hits cyclist at traffoc lights. Stops and does the right thing. Gives details to police and follows it up with periodic checks on how the cyclist is doing. Happens all the time, unfortunately without the last couple of sentences.

You should give it a go. Hundreds of thousands of pounds a week are available if you can do it well enough.
Maybe, just maybe, the cyclist cycled across the crossing when he shouldn't have? Not every 'cyclist' is of the sensible clothes, decent bike, decent road sense variety. Some are chancers with no road sense, who ride on the pavement, ride black hoodies and without lights on and don't give a toss about the highway code.
If I cycle through York there are plenty of people who can be termed cyclists but they have no interest in cycling as a leisure or commuting pursuit, usually smack heads on stolen bikes or chavs on stolen bikes and none of them give two shits about the laws of the road.
We only get one version of events. How about: Overpaid footballer, too inexperienced to be driving such a high-powered Audi (they're the new BMW, you know), floors it at traffic lights and ploughs into innocent cyclist. There. That's better.
Seriously, you would think there would be witnesses. I mean there were probably other people waiting for the lights to change?!

Charlie Austin has a bit of a reputation in the game, but he's not a kid, he's 27 and could therefore have been driving for 10 years.
