We were so busy working our fingers to the bone at Eurobike last week that we didn’t get the chance to tell you about Garmin’s new Edge Explore 1000 GPS bike computer that’s designed for touring and adventure (your heart bleeds, huh?).

The Explore 1000 is preloaded with Garmin’s Cycle Map which shows roads and bike paths, elevation data and points of interest. It also has an address search facility.

The round-trip course feature, available on other Garmin devices too, allows you to input the distance you want to ride and a starting direction, then gives you a choice of up to three cycling-friendly courses. You can also plan and download your own routes, of course, using Garmin Connect or apps from other brands.

The Explore 1000 is the first Garmin device to offer incident detection capabilities via an integrated accelerometer. The idea is that the sensor can tell if you’ve had an accident and you can use it to manually or automatically send your location to emergency contacts.

It is also compatible with Garmin’s new Varia line of smart cycling devices, including a rearview bike radar and smart bike lights. Yep, a radar! Get all the details on that from our previous story.

The Edge Explore 1000 features a high-resolution 3in capacitive touch display that adjusts automatically for low-light riding conditions, and Garmin says that it offers up to 15hrs of battery life. It is compatible with GPS and GLONASS satellites to provide a fast connection.

You can pair the Edge Explore 1000 to a compatible Bluetooth device and the Garmin Connect Mobile app to get live tracking, incoming call and text alerts, social media sharing, weather, wireless uploads and sending/receiving courses.

The Edge Explore 1000 is priced at £349.99.

Strava Live feature added to Edge 510, 810 and 1000 computers

Garmin has announced a Strava compatibility software update for the popular Edge 510, 810 and 1000 GPS bike computers. Available now, the Strava Live feature allows you to have real-time segment performance displayed on your Garmin as you ride.

“The update allows users to get instantaneous data – not just of your time in the moment, but also how it compares to your PR, your friend’s, your goal time or the current KOM or QOM,” says Garmin. “Results are calculated and displayed instantly when the segment ends.”

The software update will start automatically when you reconnect your device to Garmin Connect.

This update follows the announcement of the Garmin Edge 520 that we told you about a couple of months ago, the first bike computer compatible with Strava Live Segments.

Strava Live is also available on Strava’s updated app.

You can only use the Strava Live Segments feature if you’re a Strava Premium member. That costs you £3.99 per month, or £39.99 per year.
