We're going to be seeing a lot more on-bike footage from the pro peloton in 2015, and in the first WorldTour race of the year, a camera captured the moment a dog almost brought down a rider.
It happened just after the finish of Stage 1 of the Santos Tour Down Under this morning. The dog in question is a miniature poodle, the rider Jeremy Roy of FDJ.fr – luckily, the owner yanked the pooch back just in the nick of time.
Even before that, the video shows at times the nervousness of the peloton as it shakes off the winter's cobwebs.
If Velon, the joint venture formed by some of the sport's leading teams last year, has its way, on-board footage will eventually find its way into TV broadcasts – no bad thing, we reckon.

Pff, “almost brought down a
Pff, “almost brought down a rider”, what a load of rubbish. A blind granny in a mobility scooter would have avoided that and Jeremy Roy was probably going even slower.
C’mon road.cc, your readers aren’t stupid, so it’s probably not wise to treat them as though they are with stupid clickbaiting headlines like that.

“almost took out” is stretching it a bit; more like “brushed against”

Dog-Gate! It was not… I’m liking the ‘inside the peloton’ this footage brings to bike racing though.

The dog was a) after the finish line and b) nowhere near the rider.
Good footage though – live onbike footage, when it comes, will be great.
I’m dying every time I watch
I’m dying every time I watch these on-board videos! Such intense situations, with fellow riders inches away blasting around a corner. It is really amazing for an amateur solo rider like me to get to feel the vibe in the peloton during a race.
I deeply respect the courage it takes to ride like that.
Shit that was close!! Do
Shit that was close!! Do these spectators have no common sense at all?
By all means go and watch, but to almost cripple a rider because you selfishly think that the little poochy wants to watch some cycling.
I also noticed that some cars were parked in a cycle lane (1.03) during a cycle race.
Are they all muppets down under?
the on board footage is great
the on board footage is great and it shows the skills needed to ride in a peloton.
Suspect that if Roy had
Suspect that if Roy had connected with the dog, the dog would be forming part of a chinese takeaway tonight and all Roy may have noticed is what would feel like a small speed bump.
Dogs that size need stilts.
Never going to get that 3
Never going to get that 3 minuite back! Cheers X(
Its great footage, bike cams
Its great footage, bike cams are awesome.
I think the little doggie was interested in something on the other side of the road, maybe a cyclists leg perhaps. Thankfully the owner had it on a lead and can yank the little blighter back.
Its dogs off the lead that are a real nuisance.
‘Its dogs off the lead that
‘Its dogs off the lead that are a real nuisance’…..its dogs should not be at cycle races!
