Hi there. New to this site and know that this question has been asked god knows how many times before!
I’m thinking about replacing the stock fsa pf30 bottom bracket on my Boardman c7 due to annoying creaking. Just looking for info on best tool to use, any other brands of BB you recommend and most importantly, whether or not I am to use bearing retainer. Any info regarding this subject is greatly appreciated. Cheers!

Thanks very much for your replies, much appreciated. After posting this question I did a bit of research and discovered these threaded pf30 bb’s. I’ve ordered one by Wheels mfg which had very good reviews. Hopefully it eliminates the issue! Thanks for the info.

As jollygoodvelo stated, get an adaptor that screws together from either side and you can say goodbye to that creaking. I used a Token PF30 to 24mm adaptor on my Scott Addict frame a couple of years back now and it’s never come loose. In fact, I’m concerned I’ll ever be able to dismantle it, as it’s so secure and the mount/dismount tool provided with it is only made of some kind of fibre-reinforced polymer.

I replaced the standard FSA

I replaced the standard FSA crank and PF30 BB on my Boardman using a Tiagra chainset and a cheap adapter from PlanetX.  It works well but still comes loose periodically and needs tightening.

The key is to get an adapter that actually screws together from either side of the BB shell and holds the bearings.  If I was doing it again I’d spring for the nicer Praxis adaptor (e.g. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/292196602385) and probably put a splodge of threadlock in the screw threads to stop any suggestion of it coming undone again.
