Canyon - AL or CF disc?

Quick question - has anyone got an AL or CF version - are they comfy and a good ride or is the AL version a bit "buzzy" and the CF version a bit too soft?

Recently read a review - which seemed to come to these conclusions but i'd be interested to hear what owners on here think.

Looking at long distance and club rides so comfort and then performance....

I'd be looking at XL in either and 105 or perhaps Ultegra with discs.  Not interested in electronic shifting and the difference between the AL and CF version is the cost of a good set of wheels.

So what kind of ride experiences do folk have of these?  Did you have to do anyting to make the AL version more comfy that kinda thing...

Cheers,

J

Unless you're bothered about saving weight, I'd go with the Al...I have an Al Endurace frame, but I've ridden CF Endurace, Ultimate and Aeroad through friends who also have Canyons...if I'm honest I prefer the way the Alloy frame feels. I don't really get this whole "buzzy" thing people espouse about Al frames...with 28mm Pro Ones at 65/70 psi I've never felt particularly beat up, even over century rides. The BSA bottom bracket also means you're not stuck with a 24mm axle if you choose to upgrade your crankset. While there are some BB manufacturers who make bottom brackets for 30mm axles in a BB86 shell, there's no escaping the fact that the shell isn't big enough to take a decent sized bearing, so the solution is always a poor fix, and more likely to creak/fail prematurely.

I bought an Endurace CF SL 8.0 Disc about 18 months ago.....and I'm currently considering selling the frame in order to return to something aluminium.

My previous bike was an cheap aluminium Felt, and I expected the Canyon to be a big leap forward, but I find myself missing the Felt.  For me, the Canyon just feels a bit "dead".  It's a very good bike, but it feels heavy on the climbs, and dull.

Current plan of attack is to sell the frame &  move my componentry over to a new Bowman Palace 3, either that or put some better wheels on it.....can't decide at the moment, my worry is that selling a frame might not be all that easy.

Thanks for all the replies - as i have a bike already I don't mind waiting.   A few of my friends have them in various guises - manly MTBs to be honest but a couple do have road bikes and like them.  Stem sizing is i believe a little different but the same as Giant so easy to get sorted.

I was thinking of minimising my costs and getting either some carbon wheels and use my hand builts for the other bike. I don't mind a tight bike - rode an AL one for years before it got nicked and i always go with 28-32 mm tubeless tyres so plenty of cushion and comfort in there.

Mainly it'll be used for club rides so anything up to 120 milers over varied terrain usually around this way.  So having something a little zippier than current set up would be good.  I'd be going for an XL in either so it'll look a litle gawky but should fit.

Also in contention is an Orro Terra C or a Cube Agree.

Choices.

I have a CF Grail, comes with the leaf spring seatpost.  I find it very comfy.  A lot will depend on the tires and the pressure you ride at, more than on the frame material I think.   If you're sensitive to that kind of thing:  shifting with a manual SRAM Force 1 setup produces a 'clang' that sometimes reverbates in the frame.  I don't mind -actually like it- but some people do.

Canyon get you a lot of bike for your cash, aluminium or CF.  But they're not to be trusted on delivery dates -unless your model definitely shows as 'in stock', all bets are off- and the one time I asked a question, support was clueless.  Essentially, they get you a good bike at a good price but that's it.

As a more general comment on Canyon (I have an Ultegra Endurace Al MY 2017) I was hugely impressed with the bike, and the quality of the packaging and build. I know some have suffered issues with delays, but I have only good things to say about my experience with ordering from Canyon.

In terms of CF vs Al, obviously money was a factor, but the presence of a standard threaded BB shell on the Al was significant as well.

I considered that as a factor when I bought my bike but I can't notice any big difference when comparing my current BSA bike to my old BB86 one.

Also be aware of dates when ordering. They build bikes up in batches depending on requirements so if you are ordering a specific weird size it can be longer then you think. But they might change it around if they have different needs so dates can change.

Recently got the Endurace CF SL disc7 (105), and it is definitely a 'smoother' ride than my 2015 alloy bike. It is nicely made and I'm pleased with it.

But - if you've not dealt with Canyon before, it is worth noting that contacting them can prove tricky. I had a few queries after assembling the bike (not complaints), so messaged them via their website which gives you a case number. A week later no reply so tried the online chat function. Was told that it can take up to 2 weeks to get a reply! I asked why, he said they have lots of customers. Why he couldn't just answer my queries is beyond me. Left me wondering if I should have gone for the Ribble.

Had both ultimate cf and Al. Honestly with same kit I couldn't feel any difference between both. If I was going to buy today I would buy the Al with better kit.

thanks for that - will bear in mind as i'm running tubeless 28 Turbo's at the moment and before that I was running some Hutchinson 32's so used to bigger tyres at lower pressures.

Am thinking of perhaps Endurace CF SL Disc 7 and buy the leaf spring as i already have a fab set of handbuilt wheels so just need a couple of axle adaptors.  105 is certainly good enough for me and the amount of riding I do.   or I could get an Endurace AL Disc 8 with Ultegra for less cash.

hmm.

I was comparing the  Ultegra Endurace models on both makes. Sorry if I didn't make that clear. I did make a mistake and meant 8 series, not 9 series.

With Endurace, the Carbon ones come with the Split leaf seatpost which the Al don't so that can affect comfort as well. I have the Al and don't mind it but cannot really compare to a carbon at the moment as I don't have one. I will say that the Al was lighter then most low to medium priced Carbons I could fine. The 9.0 came in at 8.2kgs when they used to do the DT Swiss wheels. They now come with Mavix and are about 8.7kgs.

Yes, but the AL is quite a bit less expensive than the CF so you can buy the Split Leaf seatpost separately I suppose.

Bought CF Ultimate Ultegra Disc earlier in the year. I use for long distance and short fast rides and it’s great - a lot of bike for the money. My only negative is there was a bit of handle bar buzz not helped with the 25mm clinchers it came with which I had at 100psi. Loads of tyre clearance so I put gp4000 28mm which actually measure over 30mm and dropped the pressure and it’s perfect. I’ve also got a second set of wheels with tubeless which also run at lower pressure.
