Thanks folks - all comments really useful and passed on to my friend. I will post back when they decide what to do!
Unless its a top notch bike - and if it is - she'd surely have taken it with her when she flew- just buy one out there.
I can't imagine moving country without my bike !
used these people to pick up and ship door to door a packed bike more than once
www.transglobalexpress.co.uk prompt and good helping with paperwork (originally suggested by a Brit in Tas over on STW)
price a few years ago but not much change out of GBP250 plus if guy doesn't know how to pack a bike shop could do it but I'd guess 2 hours labour on a job that they probably don't won't
plenty of youtube how to pack vids = if getting box from shop worth asking for fork/frame plastic spacers
other considerations
is the bike worth shipping ?
AQUIS - Aus bio threat stuff - bike spotless - no mud no seeds - they know where to look - road bike less hassle MTB's def' will inspect and you pay big to have all the bearings waterjetted
Paperwork - need to describe on commercial invoice so don't get hit with GST (Vat for nearly ex EU brits) something like "used bicycle, personal goods" ask the shipper - meanwhile gamble on declaring realistic value as need to make sure matches insured value (assuming insuring ? ) iF described correctly shouldn't attract tax / duty at entry but low balling just in case isn't a good idea
Packing again - reckon (I used to have air/sea freight shipping as a very small part of a job) that for a bike box get charged on cube not weight (google it) so anything can do to reduce size of box is good and you can stick other stuff in as paying for size not weight - just declare it and make sure not banned
hope helps
Get them to goto a local bike shop and they will be throwing away loads of cardboard boxed that the bikes arrive in. You can use them to ship the bike in. Doesn't have to be a reuable bike box. Just remember to get insured delivery in case somehow it does get damaged.
