Following an impact from a car where my mudguard “concertina-ed” in on itself I’ve been performing ongoing repairs to my Orro Terra Gravel.

Today I set about un-screwing my mudguard struts when one of the screws sheared, leaving the shaft stuck within the eyelet – completely flush to the frame surface. I’m somewhat gutted as I’m sure that i applied grease to the thread prior to installation last September (2017).

I’m just wandering of you esteemed, knowledgeable people have an ideas for the removal of said screw. Is it best to just drill it out and re-thread it with a tap & die set or is it best to use one of those bolt removal kits?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated?

Hoping to retain the frameset’s all weather capabilities. She’s been through alot. Three impacts from motor vehicles and still running straight and true. I’m thinking of naming her Lady Luck.

You can buy a set of reverse

You can buy a set of reverse screwdrivers from your local DIY store B&Q do a set for £7 I think. Drill a small hole to get the bit started, should come out easily enough as you’ve greased it.

If it doesn’t come out you could drill it so that you are left with a very thin amount of metal left without damaging the threads which should be easy to unthread the rest.

No need for a reverse drill as it’s a through hole, if it grabs it will screw out the other side.

Be really careful, you don’t want to damage the threads.

As strael says, a reverse 3mm should do it.

The other possibility is getting a 2/2.5mm drill in the tread then tapping in a 3mm torx key and trying to get it out that way.

Your best bet might be to order a 3mm reverse twist drill. When you try and drill it out, it will probably grab the threaded shaft and spin it out of the frame, it’s good that the thread was greased as this will increase your chances of success considerably.
