A very good bike friendly place to stay in the Pyrenees

I've just returned from a cycling holiday staying in Argeles Gazost in the Pyrenees.

Argeles is a good place to base yourself for tackling The Aubisque, Hautacam and The Tourmalet amongst other classic Tour de France climbs all are a short cycle ride away.

We stayed at a cycle friendly lodge owned by Niamh and Mark, a British Isles couple who have recently moved to France to run their own business. Both are keen cyclists with good knowledge/tips on getting the most out of the area. They are in their first season of ownership and explained the hotel is still a work in progress but our room was immaculately clean, the decor tasteful and it's pretty quiet.

The lodge is an old house on the hillside of St Savin overlooking the valley. There is a bike storage area and washing/drying facilities, plus tools. There is an honesty bar with decent beers (Lagunitas!) and Niamh makes free cakes for you to dig into if you get the munchies. They make a very decent evening meal and the breakfasts are also good and plentiful. The restaurants in Argeles are nothing special so it was nice to have decent home made grub.

I have no link to the couple, I just wanted to highlight and recommend their new venture to other cyclists.

We probably passed on the road at some point!

We stayed in Argeles, and agree it's a great base. Worth mentioning the excellent route from Lourdes-Soulom along the old railway line too - it's a shared surface but with relatively few pedestrians, and it's a very smooth, direct and relaxing way up and down the valley.

I think you're a little harsh on the restaurants in town - we tried a few and all were fine. But good homecooking is hard to beat 1

You're completely right about the old train line. Brilliant way to get up and down the valley. Shame it stops at Soulom.

The restaurants weren't terrible, it was just the lack of choice.
