If you can attach a hitch to the back of your convertible you could try this, it's also lockable which a nice feature. You gas mileage will suffer with a rear hitch mount rack over a roof mount and you'd have to keep track of your width clearance but it's an option.

I think we have a language barrier - hitch in the US is towbar in the UK, so that's exactly the kind of thing I use now, which is apparently not advisable for carbon bikes, and which I'm looking for a safe alternative to for my new bike.
Surely someone reading this actually transports their delicate carbon bike on a towbar (hitch) mounted carrier? If you have actual experience, can you assist me?

I always thought it was the other way round as the aerodynamics of a big bulky object on top of the roof would easily outweigh the extra weight of a towbar carrier at the rear end of a car ? But then, I still shove a newspaper down my front for the desents so I'm probably WAY outta touch.
Quite the first world problem you've got yourself there...
Check out SeaSucker's and see how you could use them on your car. http://www.seasucker.com/product-category/bike-racks/
Very cool!
I love them... unfortunately with a soft top I have nowhere to mount them, clever though they are.
