ABOUT THE EVENT
2016 will see the return of the Dragon Tour after its successful introduction in 2015. A three day cycling challenge, the Dragon Tour takes in some of Wales’ finest riding. In addition to riding the famous Dragon Ride on Sunday 5th June, you can participate in two additional days of cycling in South Wales on Friday 3rd & Saturday 4th June. We have 500 spaces for the Dragon Tour where riders will cover two contrasting routes, the first day winding through the Gower Peninsula, the second climbing up in to the western side of the Brecon Beacons before riders complete their Tour experience by choosing one of the four distances of the Dragon Ride.
Entry packages for the Tour (which include the cost of entering the Dragon Ride) include the Ride only option and a number of bolt-on options including accommodation and catering packages with our three hotel providers across Swansea.
Further details on each of the elements of the Dragon Tour are below and we look forward to welcoming you to a fantastic three days in the saddle providing the ultimate test of riding – a truly unique experience in the UK cycling calendar.
FRIDAY 3RD JUNE
The first day of cycling on Friday 3rd June follows the Gower Peninsula, complete with incredible views across to Swansea Bay and the whole South Wales coastline. Riders depart Swansea to the west along to famous Mumbles before hugging the coastal roads down to Port Eynon where riders can dip their toes in the water should they wish. Knitting the coastal roads with a series of zig-zags through the Gower Peninsula, riders will experience everything that this corner of Wales has to offer before looping round and heading back in to Swansea.
DISTANCE: 102km
CLIMBING: 1248m
SATURDAY 4TH JUNE
Day 2 on Saturday 4th June provides a very different challenge, heading north from the Dragon Tour’s base in Swansea to the western side of the Brecon Beacons National Park with the fantastic Black Mountian climb (going the opposite direction to the climb included in the Dragon Ride) an early highlight. Riders then pedal west with the stunning Carreg Cennen Castle a focal point of the middle section of the ride. There is plenty of tough climbing and sweeping descents to provide riders with a taste of what Dragon Riding is all about. The last section of the day’s riding includes the truly stunning climb up Betws Mountain which will test the legs of the most accomplished riders before descending back south to a finish in Swansea.
DISTANCE: 96km
CLIMBING: 1791m
SUNDAY 5TH JUNE
The final day of the inaugural Dragon Tour is of course the famous Dragon Ride. Now in its 13th year, the Ride incorporates 4 distances from the legendary Dragon Devil, a 300km epic introduced to an intrepid 500 riders in 2014 that includes some of the most stunning terrain imaginable as well as treacherous climbs up the Devils’s Elbow and Devil’s Staircase, to the Gran Fondo, Medio Fondo and Macmillan 100 options which provide stern and stunning tests of riding through the Brecon Beacons. The Dragon Ride starts and finishes at Margam Park near Port Talbot and Dragon Tour riders can select their option below.
