No-one has won the Tour of Flanders more often than Trek Factory Racing’s Fabian Cancellara. And, if you follow him on Twitter, you’ll know that no other pro cyclist use the English language in quite such a charmingly (or annoyingly, depending on your own tastes) idiosyncratic way.
So with the Swiss rider out of today’s race after fracturing vertebrae in E3 Harelbeke a fortnight ago, his team has done the sensible thing and will be giving him control of its Twitter account during this afternoon’s race.
Cancellara will take over the account with around 60km of the race remaining, just before it hits the Oude Kwaremont and the Paterberg for the second time “to give his unique and very intimate perspective as the race unfolds.”
Six men have won the race three times, two of them still racing – Cancellara and Etixx-Quick Step’s Tom Boonen, also missing through injury today.
That leaves just one former winner participating in the race, and it’s a team mate of Cancellara’s also looking for his third victory – Stijn Devolder.
Should that happen, Cancellara’ reaction should be something to behold.
You can find Trek Factory Racing on Twitter here, while this is Cancellara’s own account.
