@Terry Hutt Shurely the commute *to* work would be great... it's just the return that's the challenge? Going to guess that eg. public transport is not an option for that, particularly where you are? Transport in the countryside is extremely hit and miss even in the UK.

"mountain bikers refuse to address or end their lawbreaking." SOME mountain bikers do ride on paths that they don't have inherent rights to use and some do build jumps where they shouldn't. That's just people and it happens across every aspect of life. Still, that's some emotionally-charged adversarial rhetoric you're coming out with (giving you the benefit of the doubt - most would call it trolling). It's entrenched and ignores causes to generalise for effect - to polarise, mainly. If your aim was conflict resolution it's a poor effort. If your aims were to show how negative MTBing is you'd need to be more credible in your sources and presentation. You haven't changed.

As it happens, I visited a local park on Sunday and saw a drug dealer in action. He was kitted out in a high viz vest and on an illegal e-bike. The thing is that having spotted him once I subsequently saw him again and he seemed to be utilising the roads very well to get around. He is no doubt a local advocate for installation of cycle lanes to help him and his growing business....

@leedorney Please explain how pedal stack height affects crank length. A higher stack height will make the foot position higher at the base of the stroke, but also at the top, so the circle will still have the same radius. Or, am I missing something?

I saw a truck driver plough into pedestrians on the pavement having waded through hundreds of dash and bike cam footage, so this fact is overwhelmingly true, that HGV drivers do not use the roads. 🤦

@Rendel Harris All charges were dismissed. I just caught several mountain bikers breaking the law. You don't want to talk about that, huh? Mountain bikers would like to talk about anything except the fact that they break the law every day, riding illegally and building illegal trails. No wonder no one takes them seriously....

Just when OAP-arresting police-state Little Britain is considered to have the lowest level of respect for its police force, some idiot officer says this publicly. I say 'idiot' with thought, because only in motornormative petrolhead UK would this objection even get beyond locker room banter. Given the death of more people by drivers, just because they were cycling, the police farce could focus on this countrywide cultural toxicity and the damage it is doing, and STFU about infrastructure design.

I spent about a decade managing the installation of bike hangars in certain parts of London. People often assumed we just plonked them into the ground and that was it - but it was actually a long, tedious process including a statutory consultation and a resident’s consultation. Each hangar then had to attain cabinet members approval and local Cllr approval. An incredibly long and complex process just to install a cycle hangar - which is a non permanent fixture anyway as it can be removed. Anyway, one of the most frequent complaints / concerns we would get is that bike hangars encourage drug running and drug dealing. (Not from the police it has to be said) Now I’ve never been a drug dealer, and I could never figure out how a cycle hangar might improve my business.

It seems to me that one of the issues here is the amount of damage a walker does to the land versus the damage caused by mountain bikes. I am sure someone here can point to research which shows the difference is small but has anyone looked into the damage done by e mountain bikes which are becoming more and more popular. Then of course we have the issue of modified e MTBs or electric motorbikes which are often difficult to tell apart. The other issue is the inconsiderate treatment of walkers by mountain bikers on footpaths. If you get off and walk past people on foot then it shouldn't be a problem, just as you would do on a narrow pavement in town.
