MB Wear Aero Dry Signature

Aero socks have become a staple in the modern cyclist’s wardrobe, but they often bring trade-offs. You’ll often sacrifice comfort for marginal gains, dealing with scratchy seams or grippers that slowly slide down your calf over the course of a long ride. The MB Wear Aero Dry Signature socks, however, seem to have cracked the code as they offer a rare combination of aerodynamics, great fit and cooling comfort, all while being durable enough that they don’t feel like they’ll disintegrate after a few washes.

Design and technical construction

What makes these socks stand out is the smart mix of materials. The leg section is made from 100% elastane, which provides that sleek, compressive aero fit, while on the foot, MB Wear uses Q-SKIN, a polyamide 6.6 fibre infused with silver ions during the spinning process. This helps deliver a feeling of freshness and breathability around your feet – something that isn’t a given with aero socks.

There is also a clever bit of engineering in the metatarsal area (on top of your toes), where targeted padding is backed by a breathable mesh. This helps keep the foot comfortable while ensuring heat doesn’t build up inside your cycling shoe.

Comfort and fit

I’ve used plenty of aero socks in the past, and almost all of them suffer from seams that sit right on the transition between the foot and the ankle, which inevitably leads to rubbing against the tongue of your cycling shoe.

The MB Wear Aero Dry are a revelation in this regard. The seams are so insignificant that I genuinely forgot I was wearing them on multiple occasions. I would go as far as to say these are the comfiest socks I have worn, full stop – aero or otherwise.

The grippers deserve a special mention as well. One of the biggest annoyances with tall aero socks is them sagging down your leg, but the grippers on these held firm throughout every ride without any need for hairspray or tricks to keep them in place. I never once had them fall down on me.

Performance on the road

While I don’t have a personal wind tunnel to verify the exact wattage savings, they certainly look and feel fast, and there is no reason to suspect they offer anything other than a competitive advantage.

More obviously, they excel at keeping your feet cool, offering just enough material to remain comfortable without being thick or bulky.

That said, these are strictly fair weather socks. Because they prioritise breathability and cooling, they don’t offer much in the way of insulation. I wouldn’t recommend them for wet or cold weather riding where you’d be better of with something a bit more substantial.

Overall

At just under £30, these are reasonably priced for a premium set of aero socks. They aren’t a bargain bin find, but when you consider the quality of the construction and the sheer level of comfort provided, they offer excellent value.

Available in a clean black and white colourway, as well as solid black or white, they look sharp and perform even better.

Another great option I’ve tested, which come in more expensive at £37, are the Castelli Fast Feet 3, which are comfy, look good and also stay up well.

If you’d like something a bit more funky, the Cycology Aero Socks are £20. That’s more of a Lycra sock than an actual aero sock though, without any of the normal aero features.

The Velotoze Aero Socks are staple options, which come in at closer to £40. These can feel a little tight, but are also a good option if you’re looking to get faster.

If you are in the market for a set of aero socks that you can actually wear for four or five hours without a second thought, the MB Wear Aero Dry Signatures are well worth a look, and I would recommend them to those looking for something clean and simple, or with a bit of personality in the colourway on test.
