One resident is upset "you can't just reverse out fast any more", but the council's roads chief pointed out the wands were installed so cyclists "feel confident that they are safe" and to prevent drivers blocking the route with parked vehicles
“Too often, a driver risks my life and others due to impatience. And occasionally somebody believes I have done something wrong and tries to punish me”
“It’s so easy to sort out. But instead of telling drivers not to overtake cyclists because there isn’t room, they’ve told the cyclists to get out of the way and get on the pavement”
Councillors voted this week to close an entrance to the heritage-listed park, used by rat-running drivers as a cut-through near Sandbanks, one of the wealthiest neighbourhoods in the country
Opening up the route to cyclists travelling in both directions has been criticised by residents and an active travel group, some asking "why on earth would anybody want to cycle down a narrow one-way street with no segregation against the traffic?"
“He was very emphatic that if a child is hit at 30mph, they will die. They don’t,” Conservative councillor Bobbie Dove, who also supported an attempt to reopen a controversial rat run, said
Council officers have claimed that a blanket 20mph limit on residential roads will cost £300m to implement – but campaigners say it “feels silly to halt progress this much”
The road closure was introduced to prevent rat-running drivers using the heritage listed park in a conservation area as a cut-through near Sandbanks, one of the wealthiest neighbourhoods in the country
"We don't have an anti-car agenda... there is a challenge on our roads about the dominance of the car... [they're] getting bigger and there's more of them"
Opposition councillors have fiercely criticised the council’s “out of the blue” proposal to introduce a “default” 20mph limit in residential areas
