The Gobik Deep Winter Merino Socks are warm, comfortable and well-designed for riding in genuinely cold conditions. Their merino-blend construction is really warm without being too bulky – they can feel a little thick in the tightest shoes, true, but otherwise these are ideal.

Merino wool is a logical choice for winter because it provides insulation even when wet and breathes well. These socks combine merino wool with synthetic fibres, including Resistex bioceramic yarn, which is allegedly insulating too. It’s roughly 50% merino alongside various synthetics for a good balance of insulation and stretch, while terry sections bolster against both cold and wear. The instep includes a breathable section to ward off sweatiness.

Gobik rates these for between -4°C and 10°C, which feels about right. On rides hovering around freezing, they kept my feet comfortably warm under toe warmers without needing a second pair underneath. And even when effort increased on climbs, my feet never got clammy.

These are 72g (size M) and have an 18cm cuff height, which works well with winter tights or overshoes. Whilst they wick quickly, when I did soak them – because I stepped outside for over 30 seconds in February – they dried quickly. Again, merino wool is good at that.

At €24 (roughly £21 at time of writing) these are well priced for good quality merino socks. The DeFeet Wooleator Pro 6in D-Logos are £24.99, for instance (although they have impressive environmental credentials), while the Ciovita Merino Crew Socks are £27.

Overall

These prove a solid winter option – they’re warm and comfortable while still managing moisture well. The blend of merino and synthetic fibres works effectively, and the reinforced structure boosts durability where it matters most.
