Last year, drivetrain giant SRAM took Ochain under its wing, and now, it’s brought some key updates to the anti-pedal kickback spider to improve its sealing and longevity. But, as you might expect, it’s only compatible with SRAM-type chainring mounts and Bosch systems.

Built to allow for “controlled backward rotation of the chainring under load”, Ochain was the first spider-based pedal kickback reduction system. By decoupling the chainring from the crank, this backward rotation reduces the feedback to the rider caused by pedal kickback. The result is a smoother and more controlled ride down a hill, says the brand.

Now with the technological might of SRAM, the spider-based system has received a welcome upgrade, but it’s taken more of an ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ approach. As before, there’s an adjustable model as well as a standard spider, but importantly, there’s been a real update to its sealing. SRAM says that the newest Ochain meets ISO and SRAM fatigue testing standards while benefiting from new gasket materials and new double lip silicone seals, all in a bid to keep grease in and water out.

Pile its aluminium build and “optimised” wall thicknesses on top of that, and SRAM says that the Ochain can be serviced at the same interval as suspension components (after 200 hours). Apparently, refreshing an Ochain can be done by the user. But note, the elastomer service should be done after 100 hours.

The updated Ochain is available in four models, two to fit regular mountain bikes, and two to fit Gen 5 Bosch-powered e-mountain bikes. Ochain R (MTB) and Ochain S (e-MTB) come sorted with external travel adjustment, allowing users to tune the device’s travel from three to 12 degrees. Ochain N (MTB) and Ochain E (e_MTB) do not get those adjustments. However, replacement chips are available for those models if you’re happy to get stuck into them. The external travel adjust is also available as an upgrade kit.

They’re then available to fit SRAM’s three-bolt and eight-bolt fitments, and of course, to fit Boschs’s Gen 5 CX motor.

All Ochains feature a 104BCD, and prices start at £280 and go up to £340 for the Ochain R. The upgrade kit can then be picked up for £90.
