The Tailfin Top Tube bag 1.1L flip-lid is an on-frame storage option which keeps hold of items you’d want close to hand whilst on a ride. The flip-lid offers easy access, notably when on the move, whilst remaining secure thanks to a satisfyingly positive magnetically aided clip. Waterproof, ergonomically shaped and securely mounted, even using the rubber straps, this top tube bag quietly gets on doing everything you’d need – a must consider whilst looking for your next top-tube storage bag.

Tailfin Top Tube Bag 1.1L Flip-Lid – Technical Details

The Tailfin Top Tube bag is available in two distinct styles, the usual zipped variety or the flip-lid. The flip lid version, on test, uses a moulded lid which hinges on the long edge to gain access to the bag. The lid is secured with an elasticate clip which hooks into place with the help of a magnet.

The shape has been well considered to eliminate knee rub utilising a tear drop shape which keeps the bag thinner where it’s likely to interfere whilst pedalling. Moving towards the headtube and away from the knees, the bag becomes wider to increase storage space with a final narrowing to match the steerer tube/stem.

Made from Hypalon and Ripstop Nylon panels which are 3D welded together, this ensures a durable and waterproof bag. Inside, there is a small divider against the left-hand wall to keep things organised and a padded bottom liner, akin to the sole of a shoe, to keep items cushioned and safe. A small, shielded cable port at the front allows charging whilst on the move whilst keeping the weather out.

Two options are available for mounting the Top Tube bag to your frame. Those with frames that accept a direct mount can bolt the bag directly in place, however if you don’t have a direct mount option, Tailfin has you covered. Their patented V-mounts use rubber gripper pads and rubber straps secure the pack to your frame without risk of damage.

Available in a zip or a flip lid (tested). Flip lid uses an elasticated retaining clip which is assisted in to place with a magnet.

The Tailfin Top Tube bag is available in two sizes, 1.1L for road/MTB/gravel and 1.5L for MTB. The 1.1L, on test, is approx. 250mm long, 65mm wide and 100mm tall.

Tailfin Top Tube Bag 1.1L Flip-Lid – Performance

Fitting using the direct mount method was a very straight forward affair using the supplied bolts and resulted in a super stable storage offering. For completeness, I tested the strapped option to mount to the frame which, I’m happy to report, was just as secure as the direct mount.

The 1.1L size on test gave plenty of storage for items you’d want close to hand whilst bikepacking. Snacks, gloves and even a small windproof could all be stored with easy access. My iPhone 11 does just about fit through the opening in the bag however those with larger phones may need a bit more finesse to get them in the bag, especially whilst on the move.

Having tested during some of the only rain of summer 2025, I’m happy to report the Top Tube bag is completely waterproof even after prolonged deluges. The flip-lid is very well moulded to maintain a close fitting to the body of the bag and therefore has no issues keeping the weather out.

The elasticated securing clip is a real star of the show with its simplicity and effectiveness. Truly easy to operate, one handed, gloved and with cold, numb fingers, it’s operation continues to satisfy me even after some serious use. The clip has an incorporated magnet which helps guide the clip into its final secured place. This has a satisfying and positive “click” into place which is reassuring when you’re on the move and trying to make sure the bag is closed before getting rattled down some singletrack.

Tailfin Top Tube Bag 1.1L Flip-Lid – Verdict

Retailing at £60 for the 1.1L version, this is on the pricier side of top-tube storage options however the attention to detail, quality and performance on offer does justify the cost, in my opinion.

Other options available on the market include the Altura Vortex top tube bag which comes in at £55. It utilises 1.1L of space with a waterproof outer but there were reports of it not being the most stable option.

Another option to consider is from Restrap. The Short Race top tube bag was praised for its stability and storage space but you’ll need to pay close attention to the straps. Coming in at £60, its certainly worth considering.

The Tailfin Top Tube Bag is a very well-considered and built bag for storing all your close-to-hand items. The flip-lid proves to keep the weather out, makes for easy to access on the move and the fastening clip is satisfyingly secure. The direct mount and strap mounting options are as secure as each other and with a ergonomic shape, it’ll sit on the top-tube quietly out of the way. Its on the pricier side but the quality and performance on offer is top notch.
