Continental Revo Sealant is an ammonia- and protein-free tyre sealant aimed towards mountain bikes and larger-volume tyres. It is suitable for use as a standard tubeless sealant or in tubes. It performs well, with minimal air loss and a long-lasting solution that places it among the best tubeless sealants on the market.

Continental Revo Sealant – Technical details

Revo Sealant is the only sealant produced by Continental and, while it is suitable for use in a tubeless tyre, and also within tubular or inner tubes, the information provided only gives details for use in larger tyres. Revo sealant is suitable for temperatures ranging from -20 degrees Celcius all the way up to 70 degrees Celcius.

Limited information is available but it is an ammonia-free and protein-free solution. The amounts required are similar to other brands, starting with 80-100ml for 2.0 to 2.1in and up to 120-150ml for 2.4 to 2.5in.

For our assessments using a 47mm (1.85in) tyre, the lowest recommended amount of 80ml was used.

Continental Revo Sealant – Performance

To test sealant performance, we created a standardised puncture test to assess each contender. The same exact tyre on the same rim for each sealant. The tyre used was a Halo GXC, measuring 47mm. Tyre sealant was added in the amount suggested by the manufacturer, and the tyre was inflated to 40psi. This pressure was chosen to give a realistic tyre pressure for all areas of off-road riding. A digital tyre pressure gauge was used to ensure that the pressure was identical on each test. After that, the tyre was rotated sufficiently to ensure that it was distributed evenly throughout the tyre. The tyres were all punctured by driving a 3mm nail through the carcass. The wheel was rotated to assess if the sealant had successfully sealed the hole. If the sealant worked, the test was repeated using a 5mm diameter nail and, if successful on the larger hole, the remaining air pressure was measured with a digital pressure gauge and the result was recorded.

Continental Revo performed well, sealing the smaller 3mm hole instantly. On a larger 5mm puncture, tyre pressure was measured at 35psi. We repeated the test on the rear tyre, which sealed with 37psi remaining.

It also lasted well, not showing any sign of drying out after several months. The small particles within the solution could also be seen clearly within the liquid with no clumping or sticking to the carcass.

Continental Revo Sealant – Verdict

Prices for Revo Sealant start at £6 for the small 60ml bottle to £13.45 for the 240ml, while the 1-litre comes sin at £39.95, which places it on the pricier side of the spectrum. For context, other sealants rated at 1-litre including top-rated Peaty’s Holeshot is £30, while Vittoria Universal Tire Sealant comes in at the same price.

Despite very little information being available through Continental, the sealant has performed well, with quick puncture sealing and no signs of drying out after several months of use. It’s not as well priced as some of its rivals, which may limit the appeal, but it stacks up well in terms of performance.

Product purpose:

Continental says:

For years Continental tyre sealants have been replacing the spare tyre in many vehicles. This technology has now been further enhanced specially to meet the requirements for use in bicycles and tubes.
The ammonium and protein-free RevoSealant provides reliable sealing for punctures and small cuts without chemically corroding the tyre or tube.
The versatile RevoSealant is not only useful for repairs but can also be used as a preventive measure in tubes, tubular tyres and tubeless tyres. With suitable tyres, RevoSealant can also be used as a sealant for the Tubeless Ready systems which are popular on MTB’s. RevoSealant, which is specially optimised for use in Continental cycle tyres, can be used in temperatures as low as -20° Celsius. Please carefully follow the accompanying assembly instructions.

One of the more expensive sealants available.

Overall performance:

Continental Revo sealant has performed well and shown no signs of drying out or sticking to the carcass. With the puncture test there was very little air loss on the larger 5mm puncture created.

Product likes:

Puncture sealing and longevity.

Product dislikes:

Nothing for the performance, only the cost compared to other equally good options.

Enjoy:

Yes

Buy:

No, simply as there are equally effective sealants for less money.

Recommend:

Perhaps, but not for the budget conscious

Conclusion:

Continental Revo sealant performed well in the puncture tests, with quick sealing and no air lost on the smaller puncture, and only a little on the larger. It has also lasted well, with particles still showing clearly within the fluid after months of use. The only downside is the price, putting it among the more expensive sealant options.
