It’s not just the colour that makes the Shand Bahookie stand out, it’s a unique drop-bar, belt driven, touring machine with a Rohloff hub. We’ve got one in for test in its 29er guise and can’t wait to hit the gravel!

British, well Scottish born and made, the Shand Bahookie starts life at the company headquarters where the frames are welded, tested, painted and assembled in house. Shand says the Bahookie was designed with multi-day self-supported rides in mind. They say it’s tough enough to face the harshest terrain and reliable enough to take on events such as the Tour Divide.

The Drop-bar Bahookie shares some of the same traits as the flat-bar Bahookie Adventure from Shand but with an adapted geometry and riding position optimised for drop bars. This drop bar version is half a degree slacker at the head tube at 69 degrees and as expected, slightly shorter in the wheelbase and reach than the flat bar version of the bike.

Rohloff Speedhub

One of the reasons we are so interested in the Shand Bahookie is the use of the Rohloff Speedhub (14 speed) and belt drive. Rohloff Speedhubs have traditionally only been compatible with grip shifts on flat bar bikes only, with no alternative for drop-bar bikes. The Rohloff hub along with Gelba Rohbox allows the use of SRAM shift levers as you see here.

With the gearing stored away in a sealed unit and using the belt drive system, the Bahookie will no doubt be a machine you can rely on in the toughest and dirtiest conditions.

The bike we have here for review is kitted out with SRAM Rival hydraulic disc brakes but the bike can also be specced with TRP Spyre cable actuated disc brakes.

Weighing 12.8kg (28.2lbs) without pedals, the Bahookie is no heavyweight either, taking into account the amount of kit this bike is designed to carry, that’s a good thing!

It’s worth noting that this weight for our Bahookie is for the 29er wheeled version with 2.2″ Continental Mountain King tyres on Hope Tech XC 29 rims in a size Medium. If you so desire, you can also run up to 2.5″ 29er tyres or 650B plus tyres up to 3″.

The Bahookie is beautifully finished with thoughts given to internal routing for a dropper if you’d like one. The cables run neatly down the underside of downtube keeping those clean lines and staying well out of the way of luggage.

We are going to get this bike out and about on a gravel adventure with the off-road.cc team and will be back with a review in the future.
