6 months post op multiple fractures on knee

Hi , I have been out of the saddle for at least 6 months due to the above injury.
I have been on a spin bike 4 times a week so range of motion is ok.
Physio has said I can't jump out of saddle or climb big hills which is not what I want to hear.
I will have to change a couple of things position wise as leg is set "bow legged".
Probably looking at a knee replacement in future.
I know I won't get back to where I was pace wise etc but just want to get near it so I will enjoy my ride.
If anyone has any positive advice on how to get back into it without going daft just now or has been through something similar and got riding again please let me know as it would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Gary.

Hi Nick , thanks for your reply . Sounds like the fella's hard work paid off as that was good going ! Good encouragement for me as it's good to know that i will hopefully get to where i want be in a couple of years .

I have to let the bone heal fully and see what the doc's say later on in the year . For now i am working hard to get my fitness back the best i can with the way the leg is for now .

Like your friend i have to put the effort in .

Thanks for the positive feedback as it is much appreciated .

Cheers

Gary.

One of the blokes I regularly ride with had a knee replacement a couple of years back. He worked pretty hard to get back his fitness, and obviously succeeded as he placed 3rd in his age group in the Australian version of L’Étape de Tour: https://letapeaustralia.com/.

Hi . Thanks for the replies and yes all of the above will help I am sure !
I have two plates in there and my patella is not where it used to be. My flexion is not bad now but I will pay attention to the problem area's mentioned. Got a lot of muscle to regain but will get there.
I will have to mod the bike like you say as I'm not wanting to go down the assisted bike just yet.
I'll check Museeue out. Sounds like good motivation.
Much appreciated.

Hi

If your leg is set in the "bow leg" position there will be a lot of potential for knee cap / patella issues. If you have good flexion / extension the big hinge joint should be ok (as good as your biomechanics will allow".

To avoid patella issues you need to make sure you have good ankle / hip mobility and strength in your outer buttocks / glute medius. Using single leg training on the turbo or in the gym will be more beneficial than bilateral exercises (See Advances in functional training by Mike Boyle)

The cleat and shoe position should be checked and possibly consider Speedplay pedals. Also foam roller your ITB as this may be under greater tension.

Finally, adopt the lower tension / higher cadence style rather than grinding. With the gravel gearing available you can adapt your drivetrain to accomodate the increased cadence and still get up some pretty serious stuff.

Finally, finally get a poster of Johan Museeuw his knee was FUBAR but he still rides but not like he used to, see the parallel.

I hope this helps

Getting out of the saddle is overrated. Not doing it never harmed Froome's chances.

Electric assist bicycle.

Though some will have you believe that you will be unable to handle any additional speed not provided by muscle power alone.
