FOREST OF DEAN CLASSIC
Sunday 30th APRIL 2017
After a two year gap the long established Forest of Dean Classic sportive returns to its spring bank holiday date and back on the original route starting and finishing in the county town of Monmouth.
There will be two distances taking the ride out of Monmouth and into the beautiful Forest via the Wye Valley, before climbing into Gloucestershire and deep into the Forest.
Both distances follow the same route to the first feed station at Sling at 31 miles where they will then separate, handy if you need to change distance for any reason. The long ride continues on to the second feed station at Drybrook before tackling the climbs around the Ruardean and Lydbrook area before joining the short ride again at English Bicknor. The shorter ride cuts out the northern loop up to Cinderford and re-joins the longer route at the bottom of Broadwell. From here both routes take in the iconic climb of Symonds Yat with its amazing views over the river Wye before the great descent back into Monmouth for a well-earned medal and welcoming drink and snack.
The Forest of Dean Classic sportive has been a favourite event for many years for riders preparing for bigger rides later in the year. The shorter ride is still a good challenge for those wanting a day out without the distance on the best roads with great scenery the area can offer. Many entrants make a weekend of it and bring the family as there are numerous bed and breakfasts and quality hotels all with minutes of the start and plenty for non cyclists to see and do in the area. Monmouth has two good camp sites, one in town and another a 10 minute drive so everyone is catered for.
Road links from South Wales and London and the Midlands are excellent for anyone coming for the day.
