New road surfaces in Manchester

As well as the much discussed Oxford Road/42 bus route cycle lanes between the University and Rusholme/Fallowfield/Withington/Didsbury, I have finally started to notice some actual road resurfacing in South Manchester/City Council Area. The dreadful Palatine road has been totally resurfaced with beautiful smooth and finished asphalt. No scrape and chippings here; it is the sort of thing that looks like it is designed to last 25 years*. I've seen some other complete relays. Matthews Lane in Levenshulme.

Every now and again we get to vote for a particular flavour of local government and central government but that seems to bare no relation to how bad the roads were getting or what work is carried out. Maybe 6 years after Labour government left office it was time to get on and stop blaming them for more recent Conservative neglect.  Or maybe the local council saved up enough, or decided compensation bills were getting too much. Somehow money is now forthcoming. I hope it continues and you are lucky enough to see work done.

*It won't of course, as soon some utility company will come along and rip it up and slowly replace it with a shoddy potholed mess.

^I watched The Big Short recently, great movie. I am still not sure why Gordon Brown was to blame for the financial crash.

Big Short, brilliantly done. One my favs of recent years.

We had some nice long stretches of tarmac laid at my regular route recently too, beautiful stuff, though funnily enough the weather is too pants now (-3 in the mornings, icy, windy as fuck. No lighting at night so still getting confidence up with the bike light to gun it on the fast bits). It'll be summer again until you can really get speed up on them and see if you're much faster (those Pentlands roads were awful before, even downhill was slow it was so rough).

Of course, come summer, like you say, the roads will have been dug up for some reason, or cracked because of the water seeping in and turning to ice etc.

Really wish they'd lay down the tarmac at the end of spring instead sad
