Geraint Thomas returns to Manchester Velodrome for Revolution Series

British cycling fans may still be buzzing from the success of the nation’s riders in the World Cup at the Manchester Velodrome this weekend, but only have a fortnight to wait to see double gold medal winner Geraint Thomas back in action on the same track.

Thomas, who took the men’s 4 kilometre individual sprint title at Manchester and also won gold with Team Sky+ HD in the team event, will be joined by three of his team-mates at the new Team Sky road team – Steve Cummings, Ian Stannard and Peter Kennaugh.

Changes to the championship format, meaning that riders race as teams rather than individuals mean that the team-mates will line up against each other as they seek to achieve success for their respective Revolution teams.

Full details of the new competition format and a provisional list of teams and riders were reported on road.cc last week. Featured races will include a 15 kilometre points race, a 1 kilometre Madison time trial, an Italian pursuit and a motor paced scratch race.

Thomas, who will be racing for the Rollers, said: “I’m really excited about this season’s Revolution, especially with the new team format. I’m feeling great after the weekend and can’t wait to take on the other Sky boys on the track. The competition is going to be fierce! I just hope I can keep up my good form for Chris [Newton, the team captain] and make the Rollers the team to beat.”

Another Sky recruit expected to make waves at Revolution this year is Peter Kennaugh, who was Future Stars champion in Series 3. After a season that saw the 20 year-old Manxman finish fourth in the UCI Under-23 World Road Race Championship in Mendrisio as he continues to raise his profile in the sport, Kennaugh is eager to renew acquaintance with the track.

"I can't wait to get back on the track for Revolution,” he says. “I've really enjoyed it in the past and its going to be great racing against the other teams this year. I think there'll be a lot of rivalry throughout the Series. I'm also really happy to have Jamie Staff as a captain, as he has so much experience to offer the team."
