Four years on, and I can report that the zip lasted only a few weeks after that post. Commentator’s curse…

Does this mean that the 10+ year old Ribble Ti frame that I got used, which developed cracks in the chain stays within a year, might be covered? That would be (a) miraculous and (b) commercially unsustainable.

    My new double glazed wooden
My new double glazed wooden framed sash windows are £1600 plus vat per (quite large) window. House built in 1904. The cost includes fitting and priming but the top coat of paint is extra.

We’ve been doing ours gradually over the past 15 years, starting with the original single glazed units and latterly replacing poor quality uPVC done by the previous owners. The wooden ones from about 15 years ago are lasting well and haven’t even been painted in that time.

Compared with the original single glazed, obviously the thermal performance is far better. Too early to compare warmth with the uPVC, but the frames are narrower, more light comes in and they look vastly better.

So I’m happy, but doing them all at once would have been mighty painful.

I checked my main 3 pairs (Lusso, Gore, dhb) and all have such a seam running front to back. But I don’t understand how you can feel it. Check for a saddle sore?

I’ve run a cable under the roof bars in the past – not great and a determined thief would easily get the bars off. If the car has the right type of roof rails, there might be a possibility of locking to them.

    Edinburgh is introducing similar:

You can now tell us about incorrect parking on footways, double parking and parking at dropped crossings using our report incorrectly parked vehicles online form.

    The form is here: https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/parking/reporting-vehicles-parked-illegally

Remains to be seen if reporting will cause enforcement. In my neck of the Edinburgh woods, pavement parking is very common on narrow residential streets and the change will be significant.

I think we need to find a way of taxing wealthy boomers and Gen Xers to provide the services which those generations are now requiring or will imminently require.

Property taxes are the most obvious way IMO. Reform council tax to make it truly progressive and you’ll tap a lot of unearned property wealth and also encourage better functioning of the housing market.

This is an idea I agree with, but it’s difficult, both practically and politically. If tax on cake went up, I could cut back. But if I’m to be taxed on the current value of my house, I can’t hive off a bedroom or part of the garden.

Politically, if you remember the poll tax, a big part of the motivation was that elderly Tory voters were complaining about their rates bills but didn’t want to move house. I’m far from sure that the current Tories feel any different, and Labour clearly feels that it needs to attract floating voters.

I had my gall bladder out in the autumn of 2019 (luckily before COVID hit the NHS). I was told to take 2 weeks off work and not to drive in that period. I don’t think they mentioned cycling.

So I obeyed them about work, drove after a week and got back on the bike after 2. The irritation from the dressings was the worst bit – cycling doesn’t engage the abdominal muscles much and I was never more than mildly uncomfortable.

Your mileage is higher than mine but I dunno if that makes much difference.

Obviously I’m just a sample of one, but I’d say to give it a fortnight and then try it. Hope this helps, and best of luck with your recovery.

It was a really good segment on Woman’s Hour and certainly made me think. My instant (erroneous) reaction was to wonder why this could be a gender-specific issue, only to be reminded that just getting about is often fraught with worry for women because of the risks caused by men.

And the parallel with cyclists as vulnerable road users is pretty obvious. A lot needs to be done.

The one in your picture would
The one in your picture would work for perhaps 6 passengers. At peak times, on roads carrying many bus routes, there can be many more, to the extent that footways can get completely blocked with a good old British Queue (adopt an Al Murray voice there) – ie an amorphous mass of people trying not to be late for work.

I still think that asking the cyclist to move into the bus lane is better, but admittedly I’m experienced in riding in traffic, have a mirror and ride at less busy times (early to work, late home) due to my erroneous belief that on my deathbed, I’ll wish that I had spent more time at my desk…

I’m pretty sure this was part
I’m pretty sure this was part of Spaces for People.

I’m not a fan of floating stops, because I think bus passengers (I’m sometimes one) tend to see their bus approaching and think of little else – certainly not an imminent cyclist. The current layout pushes the cyclist into the bus lane for a few metres, and I think that works ok. Certainly I’d rather ride here than on Leith Walk – like Hardknott, I rode it once and see no good reason to do so again…
