Last year I got the wife to run me in to work – 35 miles one way – on friday during the school holidays and I’d cycle home.
I was looking at train + bike – would be around 15 miles cycle – each way as a doable option (We have showers in the office) outside of the school holidays.
Circumstances beyond my control (an octagenarian Mondeo driver) unfortuately put paid to my plans before I could fully test them out.
I’m nearly 50, and at the time around the 16 stone mark. Was cycling 120 – 150 miles a week on club rides and wanted to shift weight, get the blood pressure down and spend the time unwinding from work – it would take me about 2 hours 30 mins to do the 35 miles, which I thought was too much. The younger, fitter 20mph average guys would have no problem with it – open roads, a few steep hills, mainly villages to go through; easy cycling compaired to a city.

I have 2 … both Nextbase.
I have 2 … both Nextbase.
I have an old 5 series with polarising filter for the front – this has GPS enabled and speed is recorded as part of the display stamp.
I have an old 112 series – no GPS – for the rear (I have a VW Transporter as a family car due to the large number of childern I have … telly was broke for a while, but it’s fixed now 😉 )The rear one is perminently plugged in to the rear power socket and is on constant record – even overnight; the front one I just plug in when I start the car – I have Nextbase DAB / Handsfree kit and I use both of them on a dual USB socket.
I was thinkig about hard-wiring, but there’s like 8 different versions of the vehicle fusebox, and I don’t want to put it on the wrong fuse.

Sorry to read about your crash.Oldfatgit wrote:I’m not letting this beat me though… LBS has a Paralane E2 e-road bike coming in soon to test – and I’m looking forwards to it 🙂Yesterday I bumped into a clubmate in his 70s who is recovering from a serious illness and can’t ride his bike for long or keep up with a group any more. He looked at the Ribble e-bike but decided to buy a Paralane2 from the LBS (red, 105 groupset) and is very impressed. He said it feels not so different from his Trek Madone. Hope you enjoy it.
Thank you Simon.
I was looking at the Orbea Gain and the Ribble, but discounted them as you can’t remove the battery for charging.
I’ve no power or heat in the bike store, and concerned over battery life being reduced by the cold.
Although … if I can’t get the funds for the Paralane, the missus might have to lump a Ribble in the hallway 🙂

Thanks for your good wishes Doug, much appreciated. I was doing 30mph down hill and a car turned right, across my path. He hit me, and apparently I was airborne for a while and landed through his windscreen. Thankfully, there was a paramedic unit 5 or 6 cars behind me who stopped, got my heart restarted a couple of times, and arranged for assistance and an airlift to A & EDoug.F. wrote:Hope you continue to improve.
Trust I am not being insensitive, but what hapened ?
Best wishes.
Doug.
What a dreadful experience ,
All my best wishes for a complete recovery.
Yours
Doug.
I hope the car driver will be prosecuted.
Thanks Doug.
Because he admitted guilt at the scene, it was a fixed penalty Careless Driving … didn’t go to court.
Although, as an octogenarian, he might find getting insurance a bit harder.

Yeesh. How was the rider?
Christ! I hope you’re getting better, now…?
Most of it has healed without further issue … but the knee is the problem.
I’ve limited walking ability – gradients hurt, and I live at the top of a hill – and I’ve got about 20 – 25 miles of cycling before my knee gets too painful.
I’m a club cyclist (which is great as since the accident my solo confidence is shot), and I don’t have the distance for a club ride.
I’m not letting this beat me though… LBS has a Paralane E2 e-road bike coming in soon to test – and I’m looking forwards to it 🙂

Thank you for this, I’ve been looking a Gain or a Ribble – but what I’ve read about the control on the top tube puts me off. I know its not something that you constantly have to play with
It’s good to see that after a 2 hour ride you still have plenty of power left – I’d be looking at trying to get 60 or so miles out a battery on a club ride.
I’m looking at the Fauza powered Paralane2, but that’ll be depending on a test ride …. If I don’t like it then I might join the Gain club 🙂
