I haven’t forgotten that this
I haven’t forgotten that this is a cycling website. But the rise in local politics of Reform is a concern for all of us. The idea (see the Leader’s speech below) of councils just doing pot holes, not building anything new and leaving everything else unmaintained and to rot is an interesting one to think through.
Firstly, some good news from Cornwall. Now, I need you to remember that when Reform lose, it’s “Instead of listening to the people, other parties are choosing to play political games and are intentionally setting us up to fail.” as opposed to oh I don’t know, the many instances where they’ve welcomed Conservative defectors into their ranks. A de facto party merger taking place under the Reform banner, you could say.
Reform gives up on leading Cornwall Council
The party has the most councillors, but its leader in Cornwall says other groups are playing ‘political games’
Oh dear. I can’t find the quote now, but I think “sore losers” was one comment from Andrea Jenkyns about the challenge on whether she was eligible to stand, that’s now going to the County Court.
OK, so maybe this is a just crowd-pleaser for a regional party meeting, but let’s remember what has been said so far:
“Reform UK’s party leader, Nigel Farage, has also warned council staff involved in climate change initiatives or diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives – or anyone wishing to continue working from home – to “begin seeking alternative careers very, very quickly”.
Speaking in Durham, where Reform took overall control of the county council, Farage said: “We want to reduce excessive expenditure, we want to find out who the long-term contracts are signed with and why and reduce the scale of local government back to what it ought to be: Providing social care, providing SEND* needs for kids and mending potholes.”

Although as a mum of a neurodiverse child, Andrea Jenkyns sees it differently again:

On the work from home front, I might mention that a lot of councils have disposed of or are disposing of a lot of office space, e.g.

Somerset Council sells part of County Hall to developer of key worker housing
Finally, I enjoyed this sketch about Andrea J from a Conservative councillor from a few months ago:
In the message, he responded to the news writing: “This suggests, as we suspected, that Reform will target Lincolnshire. They will do so, however, with a prize turkey of a candidate who will first need to do a screeching reverse-ferret on 10 years of ‘Yorkshire Lass’ schtick and re-identify as a yellow-belly.
“Over the years, I have extended a charitable opinion of Andrea based upon little more than having known her when she was a branch officer in Boston, and respect for her career, which had progressed far with some luck and guile, but little discernible talent.”
Councillor denies spreading rumour about Andrea Jenkyns sleeping her way through politics
The Lincolnshire councillor has categorically denied making or implying such remarks about the Reform UK candidate

What became of the candidate vetting process? Remember all that?
I doubt that Reform does any vetting of candidates apart from checking that their skin colour is white enough.
Now before I can admit you as a supporter of Reform plc, I need to ask you if there you have any embarrassing or cringe tweets from the past 5 years that should be mentioned.
Well there’s this one, this one and er this one.
Congratulations! That’ll be £25 please.

I’m old enough to remember high densities of pedestrians in shopping streets.

Here’s a real treat served up
Here’s a real treat served up to me on Facebook, reported on by the Daily Express and originating from GB News.
As well as whatever conversation this is a giving us a near-full bullshit bingo card, ABD guy is flailing around trying to explain why 30 mph is safer, which turns out to be an inability to drive:“…you are spending a lot of time looking at the speedometer and of course if a pedestrian steps out, you’re not looking at the road. You’re looking at the speedometer, so you will hit him at 20. Whereas if you’re doing 30 in a higher gear, you have got more time to react, to avoid somebody doing something crazy.”
