Are you implying an Americanism has to have originated there? Was thinking what might there be under that head? Best I could do was tee-pee, tomohawk and names of animals peculiar to North America like raccoons.

“If I hadn’t gotten out the way pretty sharpish, that car would have hit me”

I guess “trash” is another example of a word that was used in Britain (e.g. Cobbett’s Two-Penny Trash) and got exported to America and was pretty much lost as a noun. Attorney, though not completely disused in the UK, might be another.

Imagine this being your position.  Wtjs, I’ll see your woke and raise you an eco-zealot. And now over to Brexit Central for an announcement with no ulterior motives:  “Mr Tice said: “Our message to developers is ‘invest in these schemes at your financial peril.’

“We will use lawfare and legal campaigns to push the envelope as far as we can and dissuade investors.”

    Yes, our legal system does

Yes, our legal system does seem to have a thing about signs. I guess you feel like you’ve responded to an issue, e.g. by putting up a/ another standard red circle prohibition sign and then saying in words underneath what it means.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thornton_v_Shoe_Lane_Parking_Ltd

In ye olde cases, the argument was that on receiving say a train ticket from the desk if you didn’t like it you could reverse the transaction and walk away.  Not so easy with a machine.  Anyway, the upshot in Thornton was, as every public liability lawyer knows, that the “don’t blame us if you get hurt while youre parked here” clause wasn’t going to hold up.

“In order to give sufficient notice, it [acontract] would need to be printed in red ink with a red hand pointing to it – or something equally startling.”

Moreton Against Overdevelopment: Over 100 residents at event

The River Evenlode is polluted, the sewage works is out of date, Thames Water says it cannot support any more housing until the treatment works are upgraded; toxic emissions from the static traffic are harmful to asthmatics; there is no NHS dentist in the town or in nearby Chipping Norton; the doctors’ surgeries are averaging a three week delay for appointments and five days for prescriptions.

So the prize is to stop the proposed development, but even so it’s funny with drivers how easily they forget/ conveniently remember the air pollution the make all the flipping time.  What about the asthmatics?

Naturally the water company are getting their pitch in early for funding for the sewage treatment from developer contributions. The other issues if valid can be addressed comparatively simply by upscaling the provision – e.g. more teachers, dentists, pharmacists and GPs, but one more lane, even if built, won’t fix it.
Has mass car ownership plateaued now?

Weavers Wharf shopper hit by fine on Kidderminster car park (Paywall)

Managed to pay twice and enter his registration number wrong both times.

He added: “I will never park there again. I’m lucky that I am able to walk and have good mobility so I can park elsewhere, but I feel for those who are not as mobile and have no choice but to use the car park.”

What trumps the above “I’ll never go back” and attempted “what about the disabled?” is that he replied to the text that confirmed payment/ the wrong registration.

Euro Car Parks offered at one point to reduce the £100 fine to £20, but it’s still not enough for Neil here.

    Some statistics from other

Some statistics from other countries – the one here from The Netherlands says 408 car crashes into building fatalities  (“fixed object”, to be precise). Plus the usual dismal stats of drivers going on killing peds and cyclists, and each other/ themselves.

“In the period between 2019 and 2022, 1,199 cyclists were killed in traffic accidents, with 42 percent of these accidents being caused by collisions with a passenger car or van. Nearly 10 percent of all cyclist fatalities were caused by collisions involving a lorry or bus, and 32 percent were not due to collisions. These cyclists died after falling from their bicycle. Thirty-eight percent of cyclist fatalities involving people aged 75 years or older were not due to collisions.”

Some interesting charts here too – International Transport Forum.
(Pages 27-29 refer) If I have this right, the UK compares pretty well, with only Scandinavia and Iceland doing better than us, and it’s very slowly going in the right direction.  But I won’t stop until it’s zero, and people feel safe on two wheels.  All of these numbers would be way worse if we weren’t all accustomed to diving out of the way of aggressively driven cars.

For shame, we’re up there with USA and Canada with the highest blood alcohol limit for drivers (England & Wales) – pages 60. & 61.

Cycle Hemet laws:  pages 64 & 65 – quite a few of these for children

As with that stretch of road

As with that stretch of road in Leicestershire and the barrack-room stuff linked below, there isnt a problem out there that can’t be solved with MORE SIGNS, bigger signs, light-up signs, flashing signs, and even bigger signs.

With the added bonus that you

With the added bonus that you won’t be held up by groups of (very fit, following breeze, slight downhill) cyclists either because you’ll be going at the same speed. Win-win!
