38 years ago, I won’t say a mate, a bloke who came into our sixth form from another school – I didn’t know him especially well – smashed his father’s car into a tree a couple of hundred yards from the school and was killed. I’d been to funerals for aged relatives, but not for a peer. I can take you to his grave, I can tell you his inscription.
Two boys were killed on their bikes by a driver* not long after I started middle school – they were fourth years, I didn’t know either of them; the head did a full-on memorial assembly for them. That’s getting on for 50 years ago. In both cases I could take you to the spot where it happened.
* on a wide road, one driver slowed to let them out of a side road, a second driver overtook the first
