Ah, Clevedon with its wavy
Ah, Clevedon with its wavy lines seafront, now it’s quirky Hill Road under threat from on-street parking charges. Not sure what if anything got decided the other night by North Somerset Council.
Fears end of free parking would see hidden gem street ‘boarded up’
‘Don’t let one of the few remaining heritage shopping areas full of incredible independent businesses become a thing of the past’
Mr Merriam: “My business, like so many independents, relies on passing footfall: people who pop in while they are walking their dog, running errands, or visiting other shops. If parking becomes paid, that spontaneous footfall will drop. People will think twice about stopping. They will go somewhere else, somewhere free, somewhere easier.”

(I gotta say Mr M, given the type of customer you say your rely on, fewer cars could turn out to be an improvement for them and you.)

David Sims, owner of Books on the Hill, criticised the lack of evidence supporting the proposals and pointed to a potential breach of the Traffic Orders Procedure Regulations 1996, which traders believe could make the consultation invalid.

Well, I do like a good “you
Well, I do like a good “you can’t have somewhere to live because I want to drive my car” story of a morning and this is one of the best. I’m drawn in because stories like this might just point to the beginning of the end for mass motoring. Everything to “sort the traffic” has been tried. I won’t say each scheme has failed, but like sandcastles, they all succumb to the rising tide of traffic. The only option is less cars.
We’re in Canterbury, there’s an alliance of local residents’ associations addressing the proposed local plan for a squillion new mainly greenfield houses.
But that can’t possibly happen because the existing local residents have already clogged the A257 in and out of town. Those take-aways, teenagers, and pints of semi-skimmed arent going to collect or deliver themselves, are they?
Disappointingly, ambulances and the disabled (every manJack of them unable to walk, cycle or catch a bus, but always perfectly fine to drive) have yet to make an appearance. Loss of farmland and woodland do get a mention and of course everyone’s an expert on water, sewage and electricity supplies.
The article earns its Premium tag by outlining into the 40 year history of the issue.

Woman hits garage after ‘losing control’ of car during ‘grim’ weather
‘The weather was grim, standing water and lots of leaves.’
A black Mazda left the road, smashing into a garage. The vehicle returned to the carriageway, rolling along the road before it came to a stop.

I did a £100 order there in July which took 6 days to arrive – can’t recall any unwelcome charges.
Can also recommend Santafixie – Spain seems to have it pretty sorted following Germany’s retreat.

The carbrain press: the fact
The carbrain press: the fact that there are no trains from Salisbury today (Sunday) in any of four directions doesn’t merit a mention in local paper, but a driver (in England) gets stuck somewhere, we’ll go with that:

VOI – I wish them well with this – https://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/25614135.voi-campaign-help-oxford-people-share-road/. Yes, that’s empathy you’re looking for from the group that hits and runs a New Forest pony or someone’s cat (my local Facebook seems to have had a run of these since clock change).

Somewhere, I’ve got a list of reasons drivers think they’re immune from parking charges.

The main arguments around car crashes into tree are:
it’s not a building, but it is a visible, fixed, solid object – i.e. it is predictable – heaven help us unpredictable and squishy vulnerable road users
The article is classic “#driverless”
it’s a 30 mph housing estate; maybe it’s all Storm Claudia’s fault?
I tend not to feature stories where there’s been injury to the car occupants
I don’t regularly Google for news stories, but it doesn’t disappoint when I do a round-up every now and again.
A good bystander comment helps: 2 tonnes of scrap car parts dumped on a road: “definitely a tip-up lorry of some sort” is classic Police Chief Wiggum territory. “It was like a bomb going off” – like you know what that is – is another old familiar.
A good photo, e.g. the Range Rover sticking out of Tesco’s points-up the absurdity of all this. A car that’s left the road and gone into water could be good too.
And I’m going to retire to Cornwall or Wales, learn the cornet so I can play a selection from https://www.yorkshirecorpsofdrums.com/Bugle%20Calls.html as someone’s “fun” car succumbs to the incoming tide. I’m sure the guy who already does that somewhere could use the help. Even “Defaulters” sounds quite jaunty. See also https://www.yorkshirecorpsofdrums.com/images/Cyclists.jpg
Someone’s got to the job of fishing that out of the River Nairn, perhaps emperil themselves to look for the occupants – one of the many things the driver lobby is silent about.
Clearly we have to draw a line somewhere on the column – with 30,000 KSIs every year (averaging 80 a day) that’s quite a lot of local news stories, to say nothing of the countless non-injury incidents the £11.7 bn motor insurance industry deals with (the article doesn’t separate out theft and fire claims). £1.9 bn on vehicle repairs.
https://www.abi.org.uk/news/news-articles/2025/2/motor-claims-hit-record-11.7-billion-in-2024/ There’s a fair bit to like in their 10 point wish list https://www.abi.org.uk/globalassets/files/subject/public/motor/2024/motor-insurance-affordability-roadmap.pdf
Car crashes into tree in Swindon as two people rushed to hospital
What caused the crash is unclear at this stage.

Sounds like they bounced off the tree on the left of the mouth of Harlech Close and into to the greenery on other side: https://maps.app.goo.gl/NKc3KHLobA5oAA5X7?g_st=ipc

Hirsute wrote:Tesco express closes
Hard to understand how they got there, as if on the main road, they’d have had to be in the bus lane or jumped over the reservation. Coming along the side road seems even more unclear.
my guess would be a bit of WhatsApp gap going on here – driver didn’t spot stationary traffic ahead and veered left into Tesco’s to avoid a rear-end shunt.

Fears huge traffic holdups
Fears huge traffic holdups caused by lack of road work co-ordination in Cheltenham
Highways chiefs have been asked why works were not arranged for the summer school holidays
Resident Caroline Harris sent a public question to Gloucestershire County Council’s meeting on November 12 asking why road closures are not coordinated in the spa town.
There’s a cycle lane construction in the detail here, but driver entitlement to the world revolving around them – “do it at night” “wait until the summer holidays” “why did you wait until the summer holidays?” – Is getting out of hand.
