You might find you get an extra bill too, lots of stories of people buying things from Europe being hit with import duties and other costs after we left the EU. Johnson and his cronies should be shot.

On the flip side, nobody here has mentioned the mental health benefits of an activity you love. I know if I stay indoors for a week, my mood goes downhill and I am more likely to be an arsehole to anyone I encounter. I will carry on cycling 3-4 times a week, I’ll try to take more care and less risk, I may not do a 100km single ride this month, but I am not stopping altogether and unless there is a clear guideline on what is local or what an acceptable distance is, I’ll ignore Joe Public whataboutery.

However, anyone who doesn’t ride a bike seems to think there is a specific tax we all pay to use the roads, and that if they pay their “road tax” that entitles them to drive where (and how) they like.

I’ve filled it in, probably a little more pro cycling than I actually am, just to try and balance some of the knuckle dragging responses they are bound to get. It would be funny if their survey told them that everyone wanted LTNs and more space for cycling!

I can’t suggest a better tyre
I can’t suggest a better tyre, I still use Conti GP5000s on my road bike but at this time of year I am more likely to go on the mountain bike, even on the road. It has 2.25″ knobblies which I run at 40 psi, and I have never had a sketchy moment on road with it, even at -2 or -3.
My road bike can’t take anything wider than 25 mm, but I probably should look into a better winter tyre that fits, will be interested to see what others suggest. I’m nervous about riding the road bike when it gets to 3 degrees or lower, I’ve had two crashes on ice on it. The first I got away with a long slide along the road, I was probably doing around 15 mph when I hit the ice. The second I was doing about 2-3 mph as I was trying to turn into a drive, went down hard on my wrist and broke it. I do quite like riding in the proper cold, but if you break bones it just isn’t worth it.

Could you not get together with some other cyclists and share knowledge and tools and save some money by doing all your own repairs, it will give you some pride and satisfaction and also if you have a breakdown on a ride you would be able to do enough repair to get home. Unfortunately there are some so called mechanics employed by some shops just to do enough to get the bike out the door as quick as possible. Good luckI don’t know why they didn’t check! You’d think taking it to a Giant main dealership would be perfect, right?! And yes, that place is much like a lot of car repair places, they always seem to find something that needs replacing soon, or something else that might be a problem…

I was having a service done on the bike, and got the shop to fit 25mm tyres after I wore the original 23s out, but they were unaware about the longer rear brakes. A few months later on, the cable was frayed, but you couldn’t see the problem unless you sat on the bike. I took it back, and after a few phone calls, the UK distributor confessed the brake arms needed to be longer.

Just wondering why they have to be hills? You can do threshold repeats anywhere. I get that doing them uphill makes them harder, but if you are riding to a power or hr figure, that’s what is controlling your effort.

I looked at an Aithein when I bought my Propel 5 years. It was a great bike, but I thought it felt similar to the ally bike I was looking to replace.
I still ride my Propel year round, but am hoping to get some sort of winter bike organised soon. I haven’t been able to fit any mudguards apart from an Ass saver, and wet winter roads really trash it. The clearances are small so mud and leaves get between the frame and wheels, the brakes get covered in clag, and its Ultegra, so not the cheapest to replace parts when they wear out. On top of all that, I get covered in shite too!

All my family get very ranty
All my family get very ranty about bike helmets, even though I have tried to point out to them ad nauseam that they are little more than egg cartons and if a vehicle hits you at anything over 30 mph they won’t do much.
I always wear one, mainly because in the several crashes I have had, I have learned that stopping your head from banging the Tarmac or any other object during a crash is difficult if not impossible. I’m not claiming my helmet has saved my life, but it has meant not adding bruised or grazed head to the list of other injuries.

I get that, I really want a Ti bike next. I’m thinking of a year round commuter that can do some mild off roading. I want to like the Ribble, I love all that customisation you can do on their site, but the back end just looks…wrong to me.
