Depends on your age and what you’re used to, also how good you are at gauging how you have recovered. I only ride 3 or 4 days a week and can’t feel any benefit from a recovery ride. And are you disciplined enough to do a recovery ride properly? Can you avoid the temptation for a ten minute sprint or blast up a hill?

Got a call from my mate the night before who can lend me a bike so hardly had to take anything – result! Lovely day out today despite epic fail on Il Muro di Guardiagrele – couldn’t go straight up as the front wheel was lifting couldn’t zig zag as I couldn’t make the turns! And after we bailed out had a crash going down because it was SO steep!

Big Mick, I also posted this on the Pistonheads cycling page, and have had 10 replies. Yours is the only one that suggested it could be a problem, and the only one that suggested checking a case in. Apart from the fact I won’t on principle check a case in with Ryanair (extra cost, hassle, delays both ends) I’m only taking plastic tyre levers and something that is obviously a pump. I’ll let you know how I get on next week!

Think there will be some building with both Ribble and Planet X – they can’t get a bike to you with pedals on, handlebars straight etc. Lots and lots of chat this price point, most won’t be bad. Might be better to get something for half that off eBay, ride the knackers off for a year or so while you suss out what really floats your boat.

    The frustration comes about
The frustration comes about because I am 49; next year the gold standard gives me an extra 15 minutes to do the trip, and I just want to do it in 3.10. I am actually thinking about having another go sometime in the next month or two before the weather gets nasty.
Last year I was 10 minutes outside, and all year I have been thinking if I can take a minute out of all the climbs, that’s almost it. Need to think about all 50 miles, not just the 10 or so that are major uphills.

Sorry about the double post, not sure why my phone put it up twice. He was a bigger guy than me. It was frustrating because I didn’t have anything left, I didn’t think I was pushing myself on the climbs I was just trying to get up them.

Currently run standard with 12-27, think a mid-compact will be perfect for me. Haven’t been beaten by any of the hills in Sussex or Surrey but notice buddies with compacts stay seated for longer than me and generally spin away and pull out a gap on longer harder hills such as Whitedown and Barhatch. I think a mid-compact will be a better all round combination – might try the Fred next year or one of the tougher rides in Devon or Cornwall and know the standard would be hard work.

There are plenty of Chinese made LED lights on ebay for about 30 quid that are fantastic. I hang the battery pack under the stem and they light the road really well on the less bright setting never mind the full on one. I can’t understand why anyone would pay 3 times as much for a brand name…

I’m not keen on the BC events page either; I do use it but find I have to spend ages scrolling through.

    It depends how you ride

If it’s rough stuff kit is best in your pockets or in a camelbak or similar, this is down to what is known as “unsprung weight”. It’s normally a concept for bikes with front or full suspension, it’s best to have all the parts south of the head tube and rear suspension pivot as light as possible as it improves how well your bike tracks the terrain. On a rigid bike used for rough stuff such a crosser your legs and arms are the suspension so you want sprung weight instead – as in on your person.

If it’s simply riding on smooth(ish) roads then it doesn’t matter where you carry kit, saddle bags are fine, even a carradice.

What are these suspension pivot and camelbak of which you speak!?;-)

I had a Cannondale CAAD8 on cycle to work. Loved it.

I thought that too not sure how you get to spend £1800. Think the value of the bike will be £1000 but will cost you around £700.

Top country for 100 Climbs! There’s a line of 5 of them going west from Sidmouth to Somewhere beginning with T should be about 100 miles…
Just checked the map the T is Tavistock. Might be a long 100 miles (?!) but you could get the ferry at Exmouth…
