Why not forego the recovery
Why not forego the recovery shake? They are high in protein which satiates hunger (the lack of it in veg salads explains why they never fill one up) and not needed if you are about to eat anyway.Make the meal an easy one instead, for instance, my midweek club ride was last night and I have got into a nice habit of sticking a massive potato into the oven at a low heat whilst I am out. Then, I get home, wash up and tuck into a lovely baked potato (last night’s had a ‘topping’ of lightly fried mushrooms, onions, chillies, garlic and soya sauce, with some marrowfat peas for extra protein and some strong cheddar to finish it 🙂 ).
Lot’s of other meals you could prep up in advance (why not prep some stews, etc., on a Sunday and freeze them) and have them slow cooking whilst you are working up an appetite? The smell of the cooking will have you hoovering up the food when it is on your plate.

Yepp, BRT was great for that.
Yepp, BRT was great for that. I don’t use the Garmin500 for route finding anymore as all it does is beep ‘after’ I should have turned right or left. Tried it a couple of times and gave up before I even left town. I am keeping my fingers crossed that BRT will get hold of some freebie maps some time soon and start again (or that the other sites will twig that a setting for ‘distance before next turn’ is a feature that many folks would actually pay for). Ho hum, routecards it is then.

I struggled with a Bryton 20
I struggled with a Bryton 20 for over a year. Kept getting water ingress and the unit would reset at a whim. Eventually I found it impossible to sync with my laptop and got a warranty replacement. 3 months down the line and exactly the same problems occurred so I gave up and bought a Garmin 500. Wow. A device that just works with no ‘features’. Left wondering why on earth I persevered with Bryton for so long.

I found the Vendee to be less
I found the Vendee to be less than ideal. Sure, the roads are flat and I’m more of a climber but the main problem is that some roads can be very busy and the winds are pretty strong.
The Jura, on the other hand, was fantastic…great roads that are mainly quiet and some lovely climbs. Also, Annecy is within a reasonable drive and you can get some proper HC suffering in around there. The downside though is the long drive…about 8 hours from Calais. Hence, this year we are taking a break en route down to Domain de Chalain.

I love Strava and am happy to
I love Strava and am happy to pay for the Premium. I agree that the features are minimal (I like the leaderboard age selection and suffer scores but that’s about it). I mainly decided to go Premium to support the site; it really is very few pennies spent compared to other bike related purchases, etc.

Yepp, as above. Turbo with a broken collarbone is perfectly possible but TAKE IT EASY! It is easy to get carried away and even try standing (I know, I caught myself doing this and had a WTF moment). You may need to get some help flipping the stem as that can make it less painful, etc.Speak to your doctor/surgeon if there is doubt but I was on my turbo about 3 days after breaking my clavicle and I then turbo-d about 3-4 times a week for the next 10 weeks. Kept most of my fitness but inevitably lost some endurance (I managed to do the odd 3 hour session on the turbo but that really was tough on the bottom). Stuff like Sufferfest works really well as it is HIT, which can then be balanced with some zone 1/2 or 3 work. Angels and the Hunted are good, as both work on ‘climbing’, as in maintaining threshold rather than intervals (which aren’t really possible sitting, etc.).
Soon got my fitness back once out on the bike again so best of luck, just try and come to terms with the fact you have injured yourself and be patient. I found sleeping to be the hardest thing, which is what your body needs. I needed to do lots of really painful physio as my shoulder froze, and I needed 2 ops (one to put a plate in and then one to take it out after 8 weeks). I did make a full recovery and just have a scar to show. So hang in there.
