    Hi all,

Apologies for the slight disruption as we complete the website migrations of road.cc, off.road.cc and ebiketips. There are still some known issues (and some still unknown no doubt), and we’re working through them as fast as we can.

We’d really appreciate any help from readers or forum users, whether that’s telling us about problems you’re experiencing commenting, or anything you see across any of the sites that’s not as it was before.

You can tell us anything you notice here, in the comments underneath articles, or by emailing us at info@road.cc – thanks for your patience and apologies again, getting there!

    Jack

Previous comments seem to get lost when an article is updated.

    Hi everyone,

Huge apologies for how quiet we’ve been this past week or so, there’s been a lot going on behind the scenes but I have a few bits to update you all with:

    – We’ve been doing a lot of work behind the scenes on caching and site performance, which has improved the server response and made the site quicker. There’s still plenty to do on that front and currently sessions don’t seem to persist very well on mobile – we understand some readers are still not getting a refreshed homepage/seeing a version of the site from over a month ago. Obviously it shouldn’t be the case that the only way to solve this is to refresh your page, so we’re still trying to work out why it’s working fine for the majority, but still not working as intended for some.

    – Some pages went missing during the switchover, most of them have been restored now. If anyone gets 404 errors/can’t visit a page from a link they’ve found on google search or elsewhere, we’d really appreciate it if you could let us know.

    – Our RSS feeds are back

    – For our paid subscribers, the annoying message telling you to subscribe when you already have is gone!

    – The signposting on mobile between road.cc, off.road.cc and ebiketips is back

    – Some design, layout and UI issues have been fixed, but there’s still plenty of work to do – some of the site sections being misaligned I believe is only with certain screen sizes, a few things like this have been harder to diagnose because it differs between device, screen size etc

    – Comment thread sorting should be working now – I’ve raised the points regarding ‘newest’ not properly showing the comments in order of newness, tagging and images, and being able to like your own comments

I can completely understand the frustration at how slow progress has been on restoring the functionality of the forum and comment sections. All I can do is apologise and tell you that eventually everything will be fixed, but the answers I get back are that the fundamental issues affecting everyone who visits our sites need to be dealt with first, plus the usability of the site at the back end for staff. That’s not ideal at all because I think our regular and long-time readers should be prioritised, rest assured I’m continuing to raise the forum and commenting issues regularly.

Thanks again to everyone here for your feedback, we really, really appreciate it and it’s all super helpful. Even the less kind stuff!

    Jack

I just noticed you can ‘like’ your own comments, no sock puppet needed.

The website home page on my desktop hasn’t changed for weeks – both in Firefox and Edge

Something is wrong on the road.cc homepage.

In the Buyers Guide section I see six items, in 2 rows of 3, all aligned to the left and taking only the left half of the page.

In Features, I see the same arrangement, but aligned to the right.

Just in case you’re not aware, but a lot of people visit Road.cc for the “wisdom” in the comments under the articles. With the new website, it seems that commenting is made more difficult and this is going to reduce the amount of engagement with long-time visitors. When the number of comments drops off, I guess you’ll see the amount of traffic dropping off too, which I guess is not what you actually want.

I recommend that you fix the commenting quickly as it’d be a shame to see Road.cc disappear just because of a borked upgrade.

There are options to show newest, oldest, threaded, popular but when I select newest, it does not show the comments in date/time order as it used to. Seems to be in some sort of block depending on replies but even then inconsistent.
So you can see from the latest comments at the bottom of pages that there is a comment but it then takes some finding. Does not seem difficult to do an order by clause.

But can you find my post 1 minute before that ?
I only found that test reply on page one as the second post after one from 2023.

As mentioned img tags don’t work or possibly only allows certain types of pictures and jpg is not in the list.

Pages can take ages to load and then do not load properly.

The current state of the site is not conducive to visits. At work, the risk register would have been updated a few times by now.

Looks like the IMG tags don’t work now in comments. They did a few days ago, so I don’t know if that’s by design.

The reform party thread in tea stop allows new posts but they do not show up. Stuck at page 60.

Don’t know if this is actually related to the migration, but the “About the Tester” box at the end of every recent review says the reviewer is a 25-year-old semi-pro.
