The Reform Party and the UK’s lurch towards fascism

I posted an earlier version of this a while back – inspired to do update following THAT discussion about all things ULEZ.

The “manifesto”, in terms of transport, only mentions stopping HS2, but there’s plenty on the usual right-wing obsessions: Brexit, immigration, veterans and climate change.  I had another look because I worry about the ongoing decline of the two main political parties.

If the Cons stay wedded to Brexit, then we will go into the next GE with all the widespread impoverishment Brexit has ushered in – not helped by Covid, Putin, etc. People generally vote according to their pockets.  I don’t get Labour’s current position on Europe either, but let’s see how that evolves, and even the Cons may also evolve, or even pivot, but time is already running out for them.

Several roads now lead to the horrors of a further lurch to the right in this country.  Let’s hope Labour get the GE landslide the polls are predicting – but we’re still at least a year out from the real campaigning beginning.

A cycling angle? With the Reform Party and its ilk, Facebook Steve and Nextdoor Dave attain real political influence. It’s not spelt out in the manifesto, but you can see where this is probably heading and what it is likely to mean for cycling.  You can bet that this lot are very much “on the side of hard working drivers” etc.

As you all know, Dave’s going to “sort the traffic” and no doubt show them lazy planners how it’s done: Steve thinks the Council are corrupt, the police blinkered and is, if he can fit it in to his busy schedule he’s going to “teach them Lycra’s a thing or two.” It won’t concern him that his Mondeo is 3 months out of MoT or that Mrs Steve sometimes drives the kids in it uninsured.

As vulnerable road users, vulnerable people, we rely a great deal on the rule of law for protection. The rule of law means that we understand what the laws are, they are in general fair, and how they are applied and to whom is even-handed and consistent.

The fascist position is broadly the opposite – it’s all off-the-cuff to support today’s particular agenda – that’s why the Iain Duncan-Smith “happy to see ULEZ infra vandalised” comment is, as an example, so very worrying.  In the Conservatives, here is a party happy to send signals to enable the mob to attack RNLI stations, beat up immigrants, shout at teachers, doctors etc.

This right-wing stuff works by allowing/enabling significant privileged groups to to think of themselves as the downtrodden underdog and here is a way to fight back.  The pro Brexit campaign played on people’s ignorance, fears and prejudices exactly as this does.

It’s all about freedom, innit, less regulation, less tax burden, and damn the climate.  There’s more polar bears now, so it’s fine.  Let’s have open-cast coal mining, lithium mining and fracking. The section on climate change stumbles around like a Friday night drunk, trying to explain he wasn’t being racist to the barman – a denier position emerges, unsurprisingly.

In places, the mask really slips: “We must keep divisive woke ideologies such as Critical Race Theory (CRT) and gender ideology out of the classroom.” – to be honest, I don’t even know what those two are.

The standard enemies are put up – the civil service, the BBC.  Amid all the thrust and parry, there’s nothing  about making a better, more inclusive and cohesive world to live in; arts, sports and culture don’t feature in this barstool view of the world: a dullard’s grim vision.

Don’t be a member of the wrong sort of minority would be my advice, should any of this come to pass.

    Political violence ends up
Political violence ends up benefitting extremists in general (no matter who was attacked).

Unfortunately any who don’t want to align ourselves with extremists (eg. those of us who don’t feel the price of “vile” views should be summary execution) will always have to cope with their presence.

Whatever else he was doing and whatever motivation apparently he was going and engaging with those who in many cases didn’t share his views.

The task for those who want to oppose the growth of such views is to deal with that. Which would seem to demand more engagement ourselves.

Not verbal or literal shots from long range.

    Not justifying political

Not justifying political violence, but I see Farage is getting all outraged at the death of Charlie Kirk. The man was a vile extremist, racist, misogynist, Christian nationalist. He didn’t believe in free speech but maintained a “professor watch list” of academics who he didn’t like, and encouraged supporters to snitch and pressure them. He was the antithesis to western values, not a defender of it.

if Farage wants to align himself to Kirk, it is another step towards modern British fascism.

One more lane might not fix

One more lane might not fix it in Lincolnshire…

Council to fight £4m bat tunnels ‘that may never get used’ for relief road

The cost of the final part of Lincoln’s ring road has gone up significantly, but Reform say they’re determined to get value for money

Stalemate and no new road is what you’re most likely to end up with if you don’t move the water pipes; though Labour make noises about woke bats and newts not being allowed to stand in the way of <checks notes> progress.

EDIT – those woke bats in full – we’re back to this lengthy closure outside Malvern starting tomorrow

A449 closure: Council accused of ‘putting bats before people’

Worcestershire County Council has said night time working is not possible due to restricted access beyond the road, ancient woodland below the wall and the presence of rare bats.

During the highlights of the ToB, last night, second time up the circuit hill, just before the top, camera caught an individual in one of those inflatable t rex costumes, jumping up and down whilst holding the top two corners of the Union flag. That’s the sort of flag waving I can get behind.

    Made me proud…

Warwickshire County Council flag policy to come forward in September despite ‘discriminatory’ fears

    https://www.warwickshireworld.com/news/people/warwickshire-county-council-flag-policy-to-come-forward-in-september-despite-discriminatory-fears-5284246

It will be interesting to see what nonsense on this transpires next month – that and Union Jack dress girl (hopefully nothing).

The people who have had this one covered (probably as a result of some row years ago) are Harborough District Council, which has one flagpole. If you’re getting into flying at half mast for deceased staff members and armed services resident in the district that is quite a lot of admin.

    https://www.harborough.gov.uk/download/downloads/id/8373/protocol_for_flags_silences_and_other_marks_of_respect.pdf

EDIT – so there was a WCC Cabinet meeting on 4 September at which the flag flying policy was approved. There’s a livestream if you’ve the stomach for it.

Unsurprisingly the Union Flag, Warwickshire flag and St George flag will fly most days.  They’ve formalised the discretion to vary this as being with the Chairman (the County .council’s civic chief) which probably was the practice previously – but for a consensus / goodwill approach to work, you have to have, well, consensus and goodwill.  You can delegate functions to an individual councillor via Executive Arrangements, but they don’t seem to have done that here.

The other thing of note is the equality impact assessment – the heart of wokeness of course.  This seems to be saying “no-one will mind/ be affected” – set that against the response to North Northamptonshire’s decision a while back not to fly the Pride flag (downthread).  Of course these things are noticed, that’s why they’re so obsessed about it in the first place.  Although I feel for the council officers here,  it would be a shame if someone sought a judicial review of this nonsensical fudge.

There you have it. It’s just like close passes, or giving a cyclist an accidental nudge. We shouldn’t criminalise such subjective matters. We’d all be better people for ignoring it, or in the cyclist case collecting our teeth, dusting ourselves off and responding with a cheery “watch where you’re £@<&ing driving!", to which the motorist would obviously respond with a nod and a wink. Give and take, robust but fair exchange of views etc... AFAICS the beef with hate speech is a majority / minority thing eg. "we think it's fair if everyone is allowed free speech. So for example every white person in the town gets to say racist things to the Khan family, and we won't mind if they reply in kind (honest) - that's fair!" (Insert "guests in our country" etc ad lib)

    Several of the usual boxes

Several of the usual boxes ticked in this story, but where are outspoken common-sense Reform KCC?  Perhaps HQ haven’t returned their call about which way to jump on this?

Country Park users call for Kent County Council to review contract with Euro Car Parks over £20 admin fee disputes

She said: “The fine has gone up to £140 now but I’m not paying it.✔️ The stress has been horrendous.

“Car parking should not be about trying to catch out people who have already paid for parking. I don’t think Kent County Council should renew its contract with Euro Car Parks.”

“I am quite a tough person, but they keep going on and on until you give in, which I’m not going to.

“The machine was responsible for the error because they are so old and they’re not kept in good order.

✔️“I will never go to Lullingstone Country Park ever again.”

The 68-year-old is ✔️ happy for her case to go to court and will not be backing down

On getting the fines, Julie recalls screaming in her living room before adding: “I cried and cried and cried.
