The Reform Party and the UK’s lurch towards fascism

I posted an earlier version of this a while back – inspired to do update following THAT discussion about all things ULEZ.

The “manifesto”, in terms of transport, only mentions stopping HS2, but there’s plenty on the usual right-wing obsessions: Brexit, immigration, veterans and climate change.  I had another look because I worry about the ongoing decline of the two main political parties.

If the Cons stay wedded to Brexit, then we will go into the next GE with all the widespread impoverishment Brexit has ushered in – not helped by Covid, Putin, etc. People generally vote according to their pockets.  I don’t get Labour’s current position on Europe either, but let’s see how that evolves, and even the Cons may also evolve, or even pivot, but time is already running out for them.

Several roads now lead to the horrors of a further lurch to the right in this country.  Let’s hope Labour get the GE landslide the polls are predicting – but we’re still at least a year out from the real campaigning beginning.

A cycling angle? With the Reform Party and its ilk, Facebook Steve and Nextdoor Dave attain real political influence. It’s not spelt out in the manifesto, but you can see where this is probably heading and what it is likely to mean for cycling.  You can bet that this lot are very much “on the side of hard working drivers” etc.

As you all know, Dave’s going to “sort the traffic” and no doubt show them lazy planners how it’s done: Steve thinks the Council are corrupt, the police blinkered and is, if he can fit it in to his busy schedule he’s going to “teach them Lycra’s a thing or two.” It won’t concern him that his Mondeo is 3 months out of MoT or that Mrs Steve sometimes drives the kids in it uninsured.

As vulnerable road users, vulnerable people, we rely a great deal on the rule of law for protection. The rule of law means that we understand what the laws are, they are in general fair, and how they are applied and to whom is even-handed and consistent.

The fascist position is broadly the opposite – it’s all off-the-cuff to support today’s particular agenda – that’s why the Iain Duncan-Smith “happy to see ULEZ infra vandalised” comment is, as an example, so very worrying.  In the Conservatives, here is a party happy to send signals to enable the mob to attack RNLI stations, beat up immigrants, shout at teachers, doctors etc.

This right-wing stuff works by allowing/enabling significant privileged groups to to think of themselves as the downtrodden underdog and here is a way to fight back.  The pro Brexit campaign played on people’s ignorance, fears and prejudices exactly as this does.

It’s all about freedom, innit, less regulation, less tax burden, and damn the climate.  There’s more polar bears now, so it’s fine.  Let’s have open-cast coal mining, lithium mining and fracking. The section on climate change stumbles around like a Friday night drunk, trying to explain he wasn’t being racist to the barman – a denier position emerges, unsurprisingly.

In places, the mask really slips: “We must keep divisive woke ideologies such as Critical Race Theory (CRT) and gender ideology out of the classroom.” – to be honest, I don’t even know what those two are.

The standard enemies are put up – the civil service, the BBC.  Amid all the thrust and parry, there’s nothing  about making a better, more inclusive and cohesive world to live in; arts, sports and culture don’t feature in this barstool view of the world: a dullard’s grim vision.

Don’t be a member of the wrong sort of minority would be my advice, should any of this come to pass.

Lucky like all religious movements that have survived beyond a generation or two it’s proved adaptable enough to cope with local customs across different places – also been able to make accommodation with temporal powers.

But we’re getting into “The Grand Inquisitor” territory here, or perhaps Niezche (and many philosophers since).

I hope that this remains a niche thing and passes in time. Especially as the history of new religious movements with charismatic founders with questionable (not to say violent) backgrounds is dotted with the odd major tragedy.

Although … I think mostly it just amounts to “coercive control” of followers or people realising that they’ve lost a decade or so not following the messiah, just a very naughty boy (I believe the majority are male).

Seems the Anglican church isn’t too keen on this repentant sinner either. Or rather they’re keen to point out that while it’s true that there has been a great deal of Old-Testament-style smiting in the name of Christianity * in the past ** in latter years the emphasis is on hope and social justice. Mr. Robinson’s lot seem to have a … rather *specific* take on that. One not particularly well-informed by the good books.

    * Indeed such co-option might be why the cult survived beyond the earliest days, eh Constantine?

** Well, current also, if you’re on the US right, or a member of the Russian Orthodox who has taken the Faustian pact with Putin’s folks (recognising that the alternative would have been very bad for them also…)

The reason you think there are for right wing supporters is because the media is almost all right wing. Even the BBC, supposedly unbiased, shows a remarkable penchant for right wing views.

You’ve just bought into the narrative of fear, division and hatred which is at odds with what this country has stood for.

You’ve fallen for their rhetoric and lies.

The war isn’t between Left and Right, but between the rich and the poor. The “left” wants to help the poor become better off and the “right” wants the richest to get even more money. If you love your country, then you shouldn’t want the rich to own more and more of it. If you hate this country, then you probably welcome the Tories/Reform aiming to destroy the NHS so that they can sell off lucrative contracts to their mates who can then fleece everyone with sky high medical bills (see the U.S. where medical bills are the number one cause of bankruptcies).

Don’t let yourself be tricked by wily politicians who are only after their own enrichment and care not one bit about you – they’d happily sell you off to work in a Victorian factory if they didn’t have to abide by human rights laws.

(Incidentally, if you really care about stopping rapists, then you should be caring more about the top rung of society that Epstein used to ply with vulnerable girls – it’s the rich white males that are the real problem).

Also, if you really care about immigration, then why would you want to follow the advice of Farage who was instrumental in tricking us into leaving the EU which now makes it harder to control immigration as we no longer share information with e.g. France. Farage is literally banging on about a problem that he helped exacerbate.

    Apparently children being
Apparently children being able to cycle or otherwise get around independently is a problem also. Perhaps people thought that Chris Morris’ work was in fact documentary?

(Also – apparently we fix grooming and enhance social cohesion and make the place safer by *checks notes* allowing tech bros and social media barons in from er… abroad … er… to supply us with attention-capturing influence-tools… er… to operate without any let or hindrance, because it’s free speech innit, just like how people have been choosing to eat all that nutritionally deficient cheap and highly advertised processed food, or were choosing to smoke…)

    Kimberley denied the claims

Kimberley denied the claims and told the Guardian there was no legal basis for the demands, adding the letter was written as if “someone fed into ChatGPT ‘write me an angry legal letter’”.

    Ah yes, the much-vaunted

Ah yes, the much-vaunted candidate vetting process, “judge us on our present not our past” and now in a development that will suprise no-one, “the discovery of past social media posts which had not been declared by Mr Cooper. The row erupted after anti-racism group Hope Not Hate had published an article claiming Cllr Cooper had posted dozens of ‘racist and bigoted’ comments on YouTube and X , including offensive remarks aimed at Black and Asian public figures.”

Reform UK has ‘revoked’ the membership of Ian Cooper

The thing is guys, background and in particular, social media vetting isn’t rocket science – it’s a readily available service in the recruitment sector.  I was on a selection panel earlier this year and – first time for me – the role fell into the criteria for this – one candidate was amber flagged for some sarcastic post he’d done criticising his local water company, as an example.

Here’s one example of this-  https://www.experian.co.uk/business/regulation-and-fraud/background-checks/employment-checks

“BlackTshirts” would seem about the right sartorial tone… (perhaps excepting all the former Conservatives defecting to them).

    Do they just consider
Do they just consider themselves a “fair ref” in a game of political football?

Or are they hoping to channel the (generally) winning ability of the All Blacks – or perhaps evoke their “pulling together” ethos? (Or do they just like Big Men)?
