A new catch-all Tea Shop thread for those miscellaneous new stories that don’t quite fit with parking, crashing into buildings or trapped/prisoners in their homes.

Drivers – violence never far
Drivers – violence never far away, is it?
Following a parking-related incident, the offender, a man in his 30s, went up to another man’s car and punched him multiple times…

Copy pasted my post from the other Clevedon thread as it’s an older discussion and I’m lazy.
I spent New Years Eve in Clevedon and had a look at the almost finished new cycle lane (and suggested to a drunk guy who asked us to look after his clothes that going swimming alone after midnight wasn’t a good idea).
It’s not as good as the mock up picture as there is no ‘door zone’ protection for about half of it but at least the cars only parking one way means you’ll glance off the door instead of impaling yourself on it. There’s a lot of places to lock your bike but the lane begins and ends on the sea front so it seems a tad pointless as you still have to get there on the road.
The work is ongoing but we had no problems driving into the Moon and Sixpence car park. All the locals we spoke to still hate it though.
I had a little chuckle at the cyclist ignoring the new lane and going the wrong way up the one way street.
Most important of all, the full English was great.

Government called upon to intervene over controversial seafront changes
A highways consultant has highlighted a series of safety concerns regarding the changes to Clevedon seafront
… concerns that pedestrians will face walking into the path of cyclists when using the crossings across the lane and that people getting out of cars using the ‘narrow pedestrian strips’ could also come into conflict with riders.

With all the ANPR cameras
With all the ANPR cameras there are, surely it should just be automated! One strike with no MOT or VED, the registered owner gets a letter as a polite warning. 2nd strike is 3 points etc.
The next issue would be the masking of plates like they are apparently suffering with in NY but that should just be a ticket from either a Policeman or Parking Enforcement. Again, letter the first time, points after that.

Maybe they should get an old
Maybe they should get an old Leyland van, screw a TV aerial to the roof and pretend it can detect VED dodgers while actually using the DVLA/DVSA database to catch people.
Can’t think where I got such a laughably stupid idea like that from.

It does seem a bit strange,
It does seem a bit strange, after all here is a government that is inclined to monetise everything and anything, and doesn’t seem too worried about setting up a cost of living crisis (and a host of other crises) but then doesn’t hand a commission contract to – I dunno – Serco or Capita to go after the 100,000s of VED miscreants. A lack of inclination, I’ll agree, but that is different to a teenagery can’t be bothered.

how does a learner driver end
how does a learner driver end up with 6points on their license, for speeding no less, and is still driving around without proper insurance or L plates on the car
For the same reason that people can go over 5 years without VED and still get yearly MOTs without automatic prosecution by DVLA if they don’t declare SORN or get VED within a couple of days from MOT- it’s all on the same DVLA/ DVSA database. The reason is that the authorities can’t be bothered, and would rather rely on all the other mugs to go on paying
