A new catch-all Tea Shop thread for those miscellaneous new stories that don’t quite fit with parking, crashing into buildings or trapped/prisoners in their homes.

A yellow sticker on each
A yellow sticker on each windscreen would have been nice or a night’s work for a tow truck even better.

Well the bollards are wearing hi-viz.Given that the average motorist is not up to the challenge of judging 1.5 metres, 5cm is probably a challenge too far.

‘Selfish cow’ written on mum’s car window in Westcountry town
Tensions over parking are growing in this Westcountry town
Not sure what this is all about, here in genteel Topsham; it’s a 1 hour parking restriction 9-5; the van near the end of the row belongs to Arthur’s.

JustTryingToGetFromAtoB wrote:“The scheme has also resulted in a serious visual impact on the seafront” A bigger visual impact than motor vehicles? Tell me your argument is bullshit without telling me it’s bullshitThere’s some fascinating psychology here but the ubiquitous becomes invisible. (The interesting bits are the excellent heuristic shortcuts discovered by evolution to save our fairly meagre reserves of attention and how that plays out). People literally cannot see the motor vehicles – or the vast spaces dedicated to them [1] [2] – because this is “how it is”.
Also motor vehicles tend to “average out” because over the course of the day you’ll see different ones. While infra is always there, in the same position. I think this is part of the reason people so object to the cycle hangars. First they’re primed to attend to them because “new” and “objectionable” – negative emotions attached to something are a powerful trigger. Then they’re “always there” when we look. I’m sure if there were enough and they stayed they’d become invisible eventually however.
A similar but opposite effect is shown in SMIDSY cases. There we only “see” what we are looking for even though our eyes are pointed at other things. In that scenario people are only looking for motor vehicles. The rest of the time we rather ignore roads and cars in our vision. It’s maybe not so difficult: they’re distinct from natural artefacts, with square shapes and straight lines. Rather ugly actually…
