A new catch-all Tea Shop thread for those miscellaneous new stories that don’t quite fit with parking, crashing into buildings or trapped/prisoners in their homes.

This one used to be a wing

This one used to be a wing mirror graveyard. Once saw a wedged 4×4 being recovered by a tow truck: https://goo.gl/maps/8UPukHVUhEUYpMZ68

PS: threading doesn’t seem to work for me on this thread at all, which makes it quite a challenge to follow. Is it just me (I also get it on other long threads like Pictures of Your Bike)?

    Actually technically students

Actually technically students are only allowed to have a car in Cambridge with permission from the University Senior Proctor, which will only be considered if supported by the student’s college. However even thirty-five years ago there seemed to be a blind eye policy and as far as I know it hasn’t been toughened since. It’s a bit like the requirement to spend three-fourths of each term in residence within three miles of Great St.Mary’s, nobody checks up.

    One wonders how cars ever

One wonders how cars ever made it to Cambridge in the first place?  Presumably there’s the equivalent note in some college archives with challenges like “you will be issued with a bustle.  Using your chosen motor vehicle (that our council now proposes making changes for) you must attend lectures at *both* parts of Queens college, without using Silver Street, disturbing the sleep of the Dean or damaging the Mathematical Bridge.  Your vehicle must be able to traverse Free School Lane and progress through town without startling any horses…”

Pretty sure like any change there will be some tasks / journeys which will be more expensive / less convenient.  Or at least less convenient if *everyone* continues to try to do them in the same way.  That is the point, surely?

The other part is to see if the benefits outweight the costs – e.g. maybe the children can now take themselves to some activities?  Since they mentioned “teenager” I’m assuming “old enough to handle weapons, old enough to get around town independently if safe infra was provided“.  OTOH given this challenge I must also assume that some good folk of Cambridge would still assess the first as low-risk and the latter high.  Tragedy of the commons – have to drive our children due to the cars driving other children around…

If you read the challenge, you would note the older child has archery. Have you ever tried to carry a longbow on a bus? Will the school allow the teenager to bring a weapon to school? An archer can string, knock and loose an arrow in minutes. #getreal

(I’m rather unclear why you would collect a week’s groceries in the morning – maybe you have to take a fridge too)

I actually agree with them moving the racks in this instance – Wine St has a lot more space.

Yeah,  but I’d agree with it more if it wasn’t “churchgoer” Richard f-ing Eddy trying to make the point, and arging “Won’t somebody think of the hearses?!”…

Plans to put a new bicycle rack outside an old church have sparked fury among churchgoers who said the rack would “block access for hearses”. The planned covered bike rack was slammed as a “flagrant act of vandalism” that would also block views of the 18th-century building.

Churchgoer and Conservative Councillor Richard Eddy said: “When I heard of the council plans outside Christ Church, I was aghast that the local authority intended to despoil this Grade-II listed building by a flagrant act of vandalism.

“Over the last six years, worshippers at Christ Church have seen Sunday parking charges imposed on them; the repeated refusal of the council to allow strictly limited parking for the congregation; road closures; and the designation of the Clean Air Zone surrounding the church.”

A more suitable location for the bike rack, Cllr Eddy suggested, would be around the corner on Wine Street. The pavement there is much wider than on Broad Street, with a long stretch of building without any entrances, so the bike rack wouldn’t be blocking any kind of access.

Cllr Eddy added: “Now we have this hare-brained scheme to erect a cycle rack outside the church. It seems the deluded secularists of the city council are determined to close the church. If there is a demand for a cycle rack nearby, there is a wide and ample pavement only yards away on Wine Street. Why wasn’t this considered by the council?

Or local cyclists could just ride up and down the road veeeeerrrrrrrryyy slowly, or stop in the carriageway for a chat or sandwiches. If They don’t want cyclists using the cycle lane then they can’t complain if cyclists are on the road.*
