A new catch-all Tea Shop thread for those miscellaneous new stories that don’t quite fit with parking, crashing into buildings or trapped/prisoners in their homes.

Wiltshire villages in ‘lockdown’ over traffic chaos
Drivers have been left to choose between a long diversion route through Calne and Melksham or cutting through the villages to the east of the town.
Many have chosen the latter option, and residents like Ellie Murphy, who lives on the eastern outskirts of Devizes, say they have stopped driving at night to avoid the “chaos” in the villages.
After this experience, Mrs Murphy says she will not risk becoming stuck in a similar queue.
She said: “We only dropped into town to pick up a takeaway, but we won’t be leaving the house in the evening for the rest of the works.
“Our neighbours don’t want to go into Devizes after 7pm, it’s a bit of a lockdown which is really frustrating.

True – aren’t most people being forced to choose between “driving and heating” or “driving and eating” these days? And then there’s the cost of snow chains, plastic scrapers and antifreeze as the temperature drops – never mind frozen parking prices, some OAPs could literally be freezing in their cars without further government subsidies (is this right? )…

‘It’s outrageous!’ Anger at
‘It’s outrageous!’ Anger at Canterbury City Council’s plans to hike fees at Kent’s priciest car parks in Canterbury and Whitstable
Proposed 10p price hike in Canterbury/Whitstable area for Band 1 car parks:
Carole Ridley, who runs a dress shop under her own name in Harbour Street [Whitstable], said she was “absolutely horrified” to hear of the increase.
“The public can’t afford food, let alone the parking – the parking is outrageous,” she said.
“They are so out of touch.”
The city council points out that prices for more than 5,000 – or almost 80% – of the council’s car park spaces are set to be frozen, including at Park and Ride sites.
Charges are not changing in the council’s Band Two or Three locations, where fees are £2.70 and £1.90 per hour, respectively.

expensive stuff, this driving
expensive stuff, this driving, and here’s a couple of carbrain articles where two drivers (do they look similar?) seem to be feeling the pinch:
Hove man’s fury after receiving parking fine at Firle Beacon
“The park should encourage families and walkers to enjoy the countryside, not discourage them with disproportionate and misleading fines.”

Dorset dad’s ‘horror’ after being charged £12.40 for parking
Mr Fletcher said: “To our horror, we were parked there for just over an hour. I paid with my card, and I saw that I had been charged just over £12.
“If you want to go to Lulworth, you have no choice but to park there. I visit Lulworth around three or four times a month with my wife and two children who are four and 18 months. Because of these charges, we won’t be able to come here as much because we can’t afford it.”

Blast that gormless Gormley, reproducing himself all over our public spaces – an a filthy nudist too! Shouldn’t be allowed near our kids! He’s even getting in the way when I want to just drop something off for a minute at the modern art in Edinburgh…

oh dear me no, your correspondent Chrisonabike is badly mis-firing when he describes Dr Petrol as the inventor of the well-known fuel. The reality is different – Gasolina and Petronella were the sisters of a Dr Station, a little known surgeon practising near Budapest in the 1830s. The names later adopted either side of the Atlantic reflect how Gasolina, pioneer of her time emigrated to the oilfields of North America to develop the refining process on a larger scale. All three should be much better commemorated.

And don’t forget St Elon Musk created* electric cars. He is South African and he* named his cars after someone who was brought up in an empire which wasn’t the British Empire, they greatest empire ever. Down with this foreign muck, unless they allow us to wave around chainsaws and flamethrowers.
*I know he didn’t create electric cars but I also know that he didn’t even create Tesla (despite being listed as a founder, he joined a couple of years later) and so he wasn’t responsible for the name
