A new catch-all Tea Shop thread for those miscellaneous new stories that don’t quite fit with parking, crashing into buildings or trapped/prisoners in their homes.

Somewhere, I’ve got a list of reasons drivers think they’re immune from parking charges.

That’s certainly what my grandfather and great grandfather died fighting for, the right to park selfishly without sanction. That and the right to hang upside-down Union Jacks from lampposts, obviously.

Fears huge traffic holdups
Fears huge traffic holdups caused by lack of road work co-ordination in Cheltenham
Highways chiefs have been asked why works were not arranged for the summer school holidays
Resident Caroline Harris sent a public question to Gloucestershire County Council’s meeting on November 12 asking why road closures are not coordinated in the spa town.
There’s a cycle lane construction in the detail here, but driver entitlement to the world revolving around them – “do it at night” “wait until the summer holidays” “why did you wait until the summer holidays?” – Is getting out of hand.

Driver’s ‘disgust’ at Remembrance Day parking fines
It came as crowds gathered for Remembrance Day events across the county on Sunday – and we waited all week for a response from Cornwall Council

Ah, the tail-end of Poppy Rage 2025 – it’s 78 yo on Facebook who’s seen 3 cars with parking tickets on.

The Flying Dutchman pub in Queenborough bars Swale councillors after they voted for plans to introduce charges at free car parks
The free car parks have allowed us to survive. Seeing people on social media asking where there’s free parking and people answering ‘Queenbrough’ speaks volumes.

If there was less traffic congestion I suspect more trips would be driven and (like induced demand) the congestion would creep back up again. If people really wanted to reduce congestion (of course what they actually mean is “I want my journey to be quicker” or “if I suddenly decide to drive I shouldn’t find other drivers in the way”) then the go-to solution is ensuring that fewer people drive. So that is alternatives to driving and probably the counterintuitive step of making driving less convenient!

I guess there is a bit of a “we’ll refund your parking” thing with a few hotels, although you can bet that the cost of that is priced in to everyone’s rates.
You can barely get a drink at The Store hotel for a fiver, but it’s always the parking and the congestion charge that’s the deal-breaker.

We haven’t had a pothole
We haven’t had a pothole penis painter for a while, I thought. And I always like to be able to report that the council is sending a crew along to rub them out.
Driver goes on bizarre spray-paint penis rampage in anger over Burton potholes
Several phallic images have appeared at a busy roundabout
Pothole campaigner Olga Glass previously described the roundabout and many other roads across Burton as “treacherous”. She often holds a ‘coffee in a pothole’ where she invites members of the public to stand near a pothole and encourage motorists to beep in support of them.

I wouldn’t like to say this
I wouldn’t like to say this is peak NIMBY but definitely up there. Basically: “it’s unsustainable to live in this village because you have to drive everywhere, but that’s exactly what I want to do, and no-one else should be allowed to”.
