A new catch-all Tea Shop thread for those miscellaneous new stories that don’t quite fit with parking, crashing into buildings or trapped/prisoners in their homes.

Ah, the twice daily hell-fest
Ah, the twice daily hell-fest of the so-called school run. Bit of a long read, this one and the video is a bit of a plodder too.
Residents ‘sworn at’ on Cambs street blighted by school drop off parking
One resident said they have been ‘shouted and sworn at’ when trying to get home during peak school drop off times
Cllr Antunes has come up with a proposal that would potentially see parking increased in the school vicinity. He suggests adding more spaces into the car park opposite One Stop by removing some hedgerows and a clothes bin, which he suggested could be moved somewhere else.

edit – Google Maps view of Cargate Way attached and I’ve marked the site Cllr Antunes’s solution to all this. How many car parking spaces you need here??

Clearly utilities should go
Clearly utilities should go under the footways and cycle paths. That way they’re nearer houses, and don’t lead to traffic disruption when they’re dug up and then left for a few weeks, dug up again next year for a new round of broadband, dug up again for some building conversion etc. What do you mean people walking and cycling are traffic? They can go round.
(Here’s how to manage *that* properly – of course we don’t do this here because everyone drives… https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=g4H3dbnFnbU

Efforts by Anglian Water to
Efforts by Anglian Water to maintain the supply of clean water to people have run into difficulty because they upset drivers.
Anglian Water told to stop work and sort out traffic issues at Uffington
County council officials said specific conditions had not been followed

This would be that rather quaint old practice of putting pipes under the road. And the equally quaint notions of maintaining them and providing an important public service.

Two Cambridgeshire areas to
Two Cambridgeshire areas to get free parking as £1.2million allocated
The mayor promised to introduce free parking in one area of Cambridgeshire as part of his manifesto, claiming it would improve footfall in the [Peterborough] city centre
[The Leader of Peterborough Council] added: “We would also want part of this funding to be used for the Tiger bus pass, which allows heavily subsidised bus journeys for under 25s. This would eliminate the need for a car to come into the city at all and would help our youngest residents get to school, college and work.”

So we’ve met Paul Bristow before and the good news here is that for a change the cost of subsidising drivers is laid bare – he’s proposing, against all other budget priorities, to throw council tax payer money at providing free parking.

Ah, Clevedon with its wavy
Ah, Clevedon with its wavy lines seafront, now it’s quirky Hill Road under threat from on-street parking charges. Not sure what if anything got decided the other night by North Somerset Council.
Fears end of free parking would see hidden gem street ‘boarded up’
‘Don’t let one of the few remaining heritage shopping areas full of incredible independent businesses become a thing of the past’
Mr Merriam: “My business, like so many independents, relies on passing footfall: people who pop in while they are walking their dog, running errands, or visiting other shops. If parking becomes paid, that spontaneous footfall will drop. People will think twice about stopping. They will go somewhere else, somewhere free, somewhere easier.”

(I gotta say Mr M, given the type of customer you say your rely on, fewer cars could turn out to be an improvement for them and you.)

David Sims, owner of Books on the Hill, criticised the lack of evidence supporting the proposals and pointed to a potential breach of the Traffic Orders Procedure Regulations 1996, which traders believe could make the consultation invalid.

The decimal point
The decimal point demonstrates how accurate they can measure the speed. There’s a difference in punishment that depends on 0.1mph. In a 60 limit 90.9 is a band B punishment, 91 is a band C. I’m not sure how fast they have to go to be shot at dawn.

Well, I do like a good “you
Well, I do like a good “you can’t have somewhere to live because I want to drive my car” story of a morning and this is one of the best. I’m drawn in because stories like this might just point to the beginning of the end for mass motoring. Everything to “sort the traffic” has been tried. I won’t say each scheme has failed, but like sandcastles, they all succumb to the rising tide of traffic. The only option is less cars.
We’re in Canterbury, there’s an alliance of local residents’ associations addressing the proposed local plan for a squillion new mainly greenfield houses.
But that can’t possibly happen because the existing local residents have already clogged the A257 in and out of town. Those take-aways, teenagers, and pints of semi-skimmed arent going to collect or deliver themselves, are they?
Disappointingly, ambulances and the disabled (every manJack of them unable to walk, cycle or catch a bus, but always perfectly fine to drive) have yet to make an appearance. Loss of farmland and woodland do get a mention and of course everyone’s an expert on water, sewage and electricity supplies.
The article earns its Premium tag by outlining into the 40 year history of the issue.

wtjs – here’s another BBC
wtjs – here’s another BBC short with someone being very magnanimous about being hit by an electric motorcyclist (“rider of electric motorbike? “) and left unconscious in the road. But I think you’re normally right on the “2 wheels aggravating factor”.https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/videos/cdx41wwyelqo
(Man makes a good point about “if only people didn’t buy them for their kids” – but adults are an issue also… and “if only people drive according to the spirit of the law – or even just the letter”).
