A new catch-all Tea Shop thread for those miscellaneous new stories that don’t quite fit with parking, crashing into buildings or trapped/prisoners in their homes.

Stop the war on law-deriding motorists! Take out those pesky bollards and they could do 70 easily.

    Drivers angry about e-scooter

Drivers angry about e-scooter and bike bays in Southampton

“Having had a car written off after a driver crashed into his vehicle while it was parked, and claiming drivers speed down the road at 50mph, he felt the bay was also an accident waiting to happen.

He said: “Not only do we all struggle to park on Priory Road but we have seen people travel up to 50 miles per hour – they will go straight into those bollards.””

    Ashford Borough Council

Ashford Borough Council reintroduces free parking at The Ashford Cinema’s car park at Elwick Place

A spokesman for the authority, which is run by a Ashford Independents/Green Party coalition, said: “The free parking will make the cinema more accessible and help increase the number of visits.”

    https://www.kentonline.co.uk/ashford/news/new-car-park-to-open-in-town-centre-195339/

“Meanwhile, a third person noted: “If they can do this for the council-run cinema, why couldn’t they just do four hours of free parking in all of the town centre car parks to encourage people there?””

Poor old Brexit-voting Ashford, Kent, so many hopes pinned on the International station – currently with no international services – just down the road from this site.

    https://www.kentonline.co.uk/kent/news/live-eu-referendum-results-97758/

This council-owned site, a former market, became a cinema and recently the most recent operator Picturehouse pulled out. There’s stiff competition from an out of town Cineword.

Parking after 3 pm was only ever £1, so all this is is a change back to daytime free parking for cinema-goers introduced by er the Greens and Independents.

I can understand it that as landlord, the council needed to try to do something to keep the lights on, but free daytime parking isn’t going to make a non-viable entertainment site viable. What a mess.

From what I can make out

From what I can make out before the story disappears behind the blocker, they’re suggesting that the vast amounts of traffic queuing to get in to the LTN will back up and spill out onto the main road, where other traffic will be utterly incapable of avoiding them and simply plough into the stationary vehicles through no fault of their own. Or something.

    The 20mph road where people

The 20mph road where people keep getting fined for speeding

North Wales Police have released figures showing which roads in the region have seen the most drivers caught exceeding the 20mph speed limit in the last few months

    https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/20mph-road-people-keep-getting-29317896?int_source=nba

For decades, the motor industry has sold drivers (egged-on by the motor racing and rallying industry) this thing that can achieve speeds way too high for real world use, such that our reporter appears to be struggling to control his speed. It sounds like he had some chancers behind him anxious to get a fine of their own.

If part of the road did switch to 30 mph and back, no doubt that would “confuse drivers” and from there we’re back to all 30 mph. There’s never anything about protecting local people’s amenities, is there? And we get a hint of “there’s no-one around, why should I go slowly?”

It’s drivers who are being fined – no-one else.

As predicted by Sir Issac Newton, road casualties in Wales have reduced, but the continuing instability in the Welsh Labour Party leadership continues to be a worry.
