A new catch-all Tea Shop thread for those miscellaneous new stories that don’t quite fit with parking, crashing into buildings or trapped/prisoners in their homes.

Fordingbridge and its problems
sorry about the multiple posts, I’m not clever enough to montage these images. Fordingbridge, Hampshire is having some major road works done, such that the main shopping street and driver thoroughfare to the west is closed.

By rights this could be a really nice riverside town on the edge of the New Forest and next to the River Avon. The range of shops has got somewhat better since the Pandemic, but it’s not a place to linger on foot. It’s a traffic sewer daytimes and evenings with often narrow pavements.

Can’t be over on the other thread, as there’s a driver involved apparently.

Not sure why they’re running this story today as it happened weeks back? On the other hand:
Derbyshire Police said the driver committed a criminal offence by not stopping and reporting what happened.… so perhaps it’s taken that long for them to get tired of giving the driver “benefit of the doubt”?
Mind you – they should probably get rid of the bridge entirely because it’s clearly a hazard to motorists:
This particular bridge is a collision “hotspot” and has been hit 16 times over the past 20 years.Richard Bennett, heritage and environment manager for the CRT in the East Midlands, said it was “a crime against heritage”.
“It’s a really iconic symbol really,” he said.
“They [canal bridges] symbolise a slower pace of life, which is what is so appealing about canals, but the problem is some drivers don’t slow down when they come along them.”

Outraged Devon villagers block SWW from carrying out planned works
Outraged Devon villagers say they are taking a stand against South West Water – by parking their cars over a key stretch of road where contractors from the water corporation are planning to carry out works.
It comes during a busy weekend of events in the community hall, including a memorial service this afternoon for a much-loved member of the community, with an expected turnout of around 100 people. To prevent disruption for those wishing to pay their respects, villagers have taken it upon themselves to remove the traffic cones, and park cars over the area marked out for another hole to be dug.
Anne Moore, treasurer of the Washfield Memorial Hall, said: “We are all very angry and frustrated. Our requests to stave off this work until Monday have fallen on deaf, uncaring ears, and South West Water arrived this morning with a view to shutting the road to do the works.

That’s motonormativity right there. Complain about the bollards (All Praise The Mighty Bollard!) rather than the drivers speeding down the road. Personally, I’d rather that roads have more hazards if they can help reduce driver speeds and get them to pay more attention.

There is a pattern in the dissonance:
Spar owner says e-scooter parking is ‘destroying’ shop
“It’s turning customers away from the shop.
“The bin men can’t even get down Claremont Crescent to empty my bin store – now the council have made matters worse.
“Additionally, when I receive deliveries, the lorry blocks the road completely, causing a significant inconvenience with no solution for the delivery vehicle to park and unload.”

But I thought drivers were very concerned about disability issues??

They can’t avoid the bollards, but the parked cars 20 yards down the road are fine?
