German bike brand Canyon has released images of a concept e-bike, which the company claims would make “riding more fun and more sustainable.” It’s not the first concept bike Canyon has designed. Back in 2016 the brand released images of a hydrogen powered e-bike, and in 2020, delved into the world of four-wheeled concepts with an e-vehicle.
The new concept e-bike is rather distinctive in its looks, and has drawn parallels to a certain controversial American car brand given its sharp-edged design and minimalist appearance. But let’s take a look at what we know, we don’t know, and what the internet really thinks…
“The future is now”

Upon releasing the images of the concept e-bike on Instagram, Canyon asked commenters to share their thoughts on it, which as ever on the internet, has elicited varied responses.
Amongst the fans of the e-commuter design were supported athletes Patrick Lange and Gwen Jorgensen who commented what we believe to be a show of support with four fire emojis, rather than a message to “burn it.” Only joking, Gwen and Canyon…
MTB rider Sam Pilgrim asked, “Can I backflip it?? 🤷♂️😂.” We would certainly be interested in watching that video from Mr Pilgrim. Canyon, make it happen.
“55% less CO2. 100% more reason to ride”

Looking at the actual bike and not what everyone thought of it, it is certainly eye-catching.
The unnamed commuter concept looks to use a belt drive rather than a chain setup, and 20in wheels with Continental Urban tyres. There also appears to be an integrated light up front, and the handlebar and stem is a one-piece design, similar to that seen on BMX bikes in shape.
The cockpit looks pretty clean with minimal buttons, screens and the like on there to clutter things up. This would suggest it’s a single-speed or perhaps uses an automatic gearbox.

But like any e-concept bike, it is just a concept. So the details are subject to change – although Canyon has said the e-powered bike would be customisable with “modular add-ons.”
What do you think of the concept? Will it go nicely in the garage next to your Tesla? Or would you rather stick to a more traditional frame design for your commutes? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

It’s for commuting and
It’s for commuting and getting around, I like it. I’m assuming they have ideas for storage

Does the stainless steel
Does the stainless steel cladding fall off, while travelling in cool conditions, like a Cybertruck?

That or if the grips come loose you can’t apply the brakes, or you need to put it in a special mode to ride in the rain or through puddles else the display craps out, or sharp edges on the “top tube” have a tendancy to maim knees in everyday use.
Or do the chainstays fall off if you attach a trailer?

While apparently “visual design” over “function” since they haven’t bothered with a down tube – they could have inverted their “n” shape and made it step-through for greater practicality? Or they could have made it look like a “M” if they wanted to keep the silver highlighted shape…
TBH I think the most interesting “concept” I’ve seen but which also had some practicality was the late Mike Burrow’s “Gordon“. Some odd choices * BUT overall practical to use and I’d have loved one as a run-around.
* Single-sided axles – his “thing”, with some practical utility but for not-at-all-quick release wheels (hub gears) you can just patch tyres without removing wheels… Some “road bike” features e.g. internal cabling, carbon fibre. The latter would have sunk it financially even if the single-side axles and Pinion gearbox didn’t, but a shopper that would respond if you put some power into it would be cheerful…
Ah yes, let’s copy the design
Ah yes, let’s copy the design cues of one of the most dangerous civillian vehicles to vulnerable road users, by a company owned by a fascist.
WTAF Canyon, give your heads a wobble.
This must be one of the most
This must be one of the most loaded headlines ever…
Gotta give it to Canyon for
Gotta give it to Canyon for thinking outside the box. Feels like the Cybertruck had a two-wheeled cousin. Can totally see this cruising through the city. Hope they actually make it!
