Pedro's Ice Wax 2.0

Dry lube that performs brilliantly well and will reduce cleaning effort

At every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

Ice Wax 2.0 from Pedro's is a chain lubricant that aims to reduce the time you spend cleaning your chain, by doing it for you in part. A lube for dry conditions, it's perfect for spring.

The wax comes in varying sized bottles depending on your preference. The 100ml bottle is a decent size and should last a while. It has a simple screw cap and the applicator nozzle is small enough that you can apply the lube directly to wherever you want it.

As a dry lube, it is designed for mixed riding, but mainly in dry conditions (it will work with the odd puddle or splash). The wax is supposed to wear off over time, and in the process of doing this, it leaves a cleaner chain by taking off any grime with it.

For the first application, it was applied to an already clean chain. The wax is waterier than other lubes I have used. I thought this would make it harder to apply, but the opposite is true. The nozzle is extremely narrow so no lube is wasted as it comes out fairly slowly, making application simple.

Pedro's recommend waiting at least an hour before you ride after applying, to give the lube time to dry. Because once dry, they say, it gives your chain a protective coating. I added it at the end of a ride, so it was left overnight (Pedros say this is an ideal length of time).

At the end of the ride, the chain looked pretty clean. Over the following week, the routine of light cleaning and lubing the chain continued. One thing that was certain was that my chain stayed looking like a clean chain as opposed to the usual black colour it can go.

The wax is easy to apply and remove. And you definitely start to notice that it works after a few applications. It's also biodegradable which ticks the environmental box.

As a low maintenance lube, this one is perfect for spring/summer riding.

As a dry lube, this performs brilliantly well and will reduce cleaning effort.

Tell us what the product is for, and who it's aimed at. What do the manufacturers say about it? How does that compare to your own feelings about it?

A lube for dry to mixed conditions aimed at all cyclists. Pedro's say "Ice Wax is an advanced natural wax dry chain lube. The biodegradable formula features a solvent-free detergent carrier which goes on wet to penetrate and flush dirt and grime during application. The carrier then evaporates leaving a semi-solid dry wax coating on the surfaces of the chain which provides excellent lubrication, efficiency, and wear protection. Though best in dry conditions the coating of wax also repels water from puddles or stream crossings." I found the wax performed very well on both my road and mountain bike.
