It's official: Fabian Cancellara joins the Luxembourg Pro Cycling Project

Pope Catholic, team also confirms.

The will-he-won't-he-look-he-basically-will-so-just-tell-us saga regarding Fabian Cancellara's move to the Luxembourg Pro Cycling Project has finally been put to bed this lunchtime with the news that the Swiss big cheese has signed a three-year deal to team up with most of the rest of his Saxo Bank cronies from 2010. The signing officially confirms the Schleck's team as the one to beat for next season, with a list of big hitters as long as your arm.

"We entered into this project with the objective to become one of the best teams in the sport," General Manager Brian Nygaard said, and he looks to have fulfilled that brief with a roster that includes both Schlecks, Daniele Bennati, the legendary Jens Voigt and a host of other top names that's a mix of old hands, proven riders and new talent. "Obviously signing a rider like Cancellara, we have added one of the most significant athletes and personalities in professional cycling as such. He brings an amazing amount of depth and quality to the project and we’re extremely proud to have him onboard.”

"It does mean that we have quite a responsibility living up to our own high expectations – on all levels. But we are confident in the abilities of this great group of people and proud to be taking this project forward for all the fans of professional cycling.”

“We are now ready to gather everyone in Switzerland for our first team meeting. It will be important that we all get to know each other on a friendly, mrelaxed basis and make certain that everyone starts the season on the same page," Nygaard continued. To be a fly on the wall at that one...
