In 2012 I cycled from Montreal to Miami with a Canadian friend. We were on US17 three miles north of Darien, Georgia when we came across a roadside memorial site for two cyclists, Todd Metts & Jeff Dunn, who had been killed six months earlier.

We took pictures for our blog and checked the net for reports and, particularly, to find out what happened to the driver. I have never been able to find a report that the driver was charged. It seems he got away with killing two cyclists who were doing everything right.
My guess is, unless drugs or alcohol are involved, this woman will get off scotfree or very lightly,. I hope I'm wrong.
A couple of days later we entered Florida and went around Jacksonville to take the ferry across the St. John river. A group of local cyclists were on the same ferry and told us cycling in the Jacksonville area was dangerous because drivers had little consideration for cyclists. Nevertheless, we contiued on our way and survived with no bad incidents.
"distracted by something in her vehicle"
If I were a gambling man, I would place a bet on "something" being a "cellphone" in the US parlance, but I suspect I would get very short odds.
As with Brooksby, and
A sensible protocol for the police to follow in cases like this would be to check mobile phone records and/or any phones in the vehicle and also perform a simple eye check on the driver (e.g. what does that license plate over there say?). Any irregularities could then be properly investigated, but it would put a stop to the drivers just bullshitting their way out of their responsibilities.
Terrible incident. Glad she "pulled over after she realised she had had a collision" but I'd bl00dy hope she would have noticed hitting a group of fourteen riders! How long was she "blinded by the sun and distracted by something in her vehicle" for, exactly...?
