Great Britain’s Tom Pidcock is the new Under-23 European Cyclo-Cross champion

Great Britain’s Tom Pidcock has added to his growing medal collection with victory today at the UEC Under-23 European Cyclo-Cross championship at ‘s-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands.

The 19-year-old, who was runner-up 12 months ago and won the junior title the year before that,  won today’s race from Belgium’s Eli Iserbyt, second, and Antoine Benoist of France, who took thid.

A dominant British performance saw Ben Turner finish fourth with Thomas Mein fifth, while Dan Tullett came 13th.

The versatile Yorkshireman is also a past winner of the junior world time trial championship and Paris-Roubaix Juniors, as well as winning the national circuit race championship, all those successes coming in 2017.

Last season he won four races un the Under 23 UCI Cyclo-Cross World Cup, as well as the overall title.

Pidcock, who rides on the road with Team Wiggins and has set up his own TP Racing team for the current cyclo-cross campaign, said after his latest triumph:  "The start of the season was difficult.

"A new team always takes getting used to, but the results were not as hoped.

“In addition, I had to deal with an injury and illness. It is therefore good for my self-confidence that I won here.”

Speaking of today’s race, he said: "I was so nervous before the start, considering all the hard work of the past weeks. I drove very well today through the corners.

“This allowed me to take things a bit slower on the long straights. I decided to walk through the sand, since there were very deep tracks. Then it is difficult to drive through.

"I have only returned to a good level for two weeks. I will now rest for a few days, after which I will work towards my other goals.”

Pidcock added; “I will ride two more races next week, to catch the World Cup of Koksijde next week. Then I go to Girona for three weeks to train.”
