Mark Cavendish wins Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne

Back-to-back British wins as Belgian Classics season get underway - but Etixx-Quick Step blushed spared today

Mark Cavendish has made it back-to-back wins for British riders in Belgium on the opening weekend of the Classics season - and in doing so has given his Etixx-Quick Step team cause for celebration after Team Sky's Ian Stannard outfoxed three of its riders to win the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad yesterday.

It's Cavendish's second victory in the Belgian Classic, the first coming in 2012 in the jersey of world champion, when he was riding for Team Sky.

Today, the British team's hopes rested on Italian sprinter Elia Viviani, but despite Sky working hard to help chase down a late attack by BMC Racing's Philippe Gilbert, he finished third, with Cavendish beating Katusha's Alexander Kristoff to the line.

Last week Etixxx-Quick Step manager Patrick Lefevere warned Cavendish he needed to win some big races ahead of his contract expiring at the end of this season if he wants to stay with the team.

Here are Lefevere and Tom Boonen talking about Cavendish's win, as well as the Manx rider himself.

They kinda messed up the lead-out train into the headwind but Cav got it done nonetheless!

A lot of the ettix riders were in the front group of 15-20 pulling for a fair while before all the riders came back together before the finishing circuits, probably weakened from that effort.

They were used up pulling the peleton back upto the lone rider in a headwind. He was a class above today.

I would have thought his team would have helped him a bit longer, but excellent riding from him, he's in a decent run of form.
