In an ideal world, we wouldn’t need any school crossing patrols. In an ideal world, the real danger to children from being hit by a motorised vehicle, controlled by another human being, would be better controlled.

We can do something about this. Vision zero – the aim that there will be no deaths or serious injuries on our roads- is something we will work towards, like many other UK councils, and cities and countries across the world.

Whether that means making the roads and cars safer for all, improving driver behaviour, or increasing enforcement, we must do everything we can to protect our children and ourselves from road danger.

This includes cracking down on poor cycling and scooting, and ensuring our pavements are clear for pedestrians.

School streets – closing the street outside the school gate, at school drop-off and pick-up times – will also be part of the process.

But most of all, we should focus on the source of danger and risk: motorised vehicles. This includes tackling rat running on residential streets, driving more slowly and leaving the car at home for those who can.[/quote]

According to (Jeff / Elon / Peter / Sam / Mark) that’s a really silly complaint.  The science/tech ensures that the new copy is exactly the same as the first and the process works 100% of the time *.

(Incoming news – “it wasn’t me, it was my clone” defence now succeeding in 93% of cases – pending the judiciary understanding the logic…).

    * Strictly speaking it’s 99.99% of the time currently, but we’re improving!  We’ve also implemented backups and a robust complaints procedure.  Also by not coming round to the office ** and telling us in person you don’t want to be a part of this you’ll find you’ve legally consented.

** Unfortunately the office disappeared during alpha testing.

That’d be all well and good until people realise that it’s not teleportation, but cloning to a remote location and destroying the original person.

All good – but as usual a vote for a complete change of mindset. “Vision zero” can be a good, well defined program but I think a lot of the time it’s used more as a slogan / “if we just do the same things but a bit better…”

(Perhaps going beyond the usual scope we consider – but if our goal is just “don’t kill people” that is sadly low ambition. I would also like “nicer places” and some of the many benefits which come from more people “travelling actively”.)

We have to start from a different philosophy and have a good practical understanding of how all the pieces fit together to create change and reinforce it. So “Sustainable Safety” for me, please!
